What’s Up Doc?: Pennebaker/Hegedus & Malick Voyage to the Top in November

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

Right behind, the American direct cinema masters is a Texan soon to make his non-fiction debut with Voyage of Time. Just two weeks ago indieWIRE reported that Ennio Morricone, who scored

What’s Up Doc?: Wiseman Rises to New “Heights” & Rivers Shooting “The Two Eyes Are Not Brothers” in Morocco

It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

"Higher Ground," "Our Idiot Brother," More

  • MUBI
Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground "admirably tries, on a minuscule budget, to evoke the spirit of American cinema from 35 years ago: the age of Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall, an era much more hospitable to serious roles for women than the current one." Melissa Anderson in the Voice: "As reported in a New York Times Magazine cover story on the actress in 2006 (three years before her Oscar-nominated performance in Up in the Air), Farmiga has expressed her disgust with the roles offered her by setting scripts on fire: 'I stack up all those crass female characters, all those utterly ordinary women, all those hundreds and hundreds of parts that have no substance or meaning and turn them into a blazing pyre.' It's a shame, then, that Higher Ground never really ignites."

Farmiga plays "Corinne, a Midwest rural woman who embraces a hippie-inflected but paternalistic evangelical community with her high

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Thor: Tales of Asgard’ Feels Like Cheap Blockbuster Tie-In

Chicago – Animated Marvel Features and Lionsgate very purposefully released a straight-to-dvd Thor movie this month to try and cash in a bit on the success of the summer blockbuster “Thor” with Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. With some of the same characters, enemies, and locations, the animated version plays not unlike a Saturday morning cartoon version of what you just saw in theaters. Potential viewers under twelve should find enough action here to not consider their time wasted, but anyone older will surely be a a bit bored.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor” is about to crest $400 million worldwide and so it makes sense that toys, games, and other peripheral merchandise would hit the market to try and cash in on the film’s success. “Tales of Asgard” could have been a clever expansion of the Marvel comic and hit film but it plays too much like an afterthought,

Exclusive: Matthew Wolf Talks Thor: Tales of Asgard
Thor, the live-action superhero adventure starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, is well on its way to box office success, taking in just under $120 million after just 10 days at the box office. For superhero fans that want more Thor, but in a different format, Lionsgate is releasing the animated movie Thor: Tales of Asgard, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on May 17. This new adventure takes place before Thor ever lifted Mjolnir, as he sets off on a journey with his brother Loki on what starts out to be a treasure hunt, and turns out to be much more treacherous.

Matthew Wolf provides the voice of Thor in Thor: Tales of Asgard, and I recently had the chance to speak with this actor over the phone about taking on this voice role.

Who’S It For? Younger viewers who may not even be old enough to see Thor will likely enjoy this simple story, though they might be bored by the movie’s lack of action and focus on drama. Fans of Thor might enjoy the way it captures the Asgardian background of Thor’s character.

DVD Review: Hulk Vs Thor

Hulk Vs Thor

Blu-ray | DVD

Directed by Takuji Endo and Sam Liu

Screenplay Christopher Yost

Starring Matthew Wolf, Graham McTavish, Kari Wahlgren, Bryce Johnson, Grey DeLisle

As much as we love our heroes, there is one question that anyone who has ever picked up a comic book encounters: “Who would win in a fight…?” In Hulk Vs Thor, we get to see that fantasy scenario played out in an epic battle for Asgard.

Year after year, Asgard is watched over by Odin, the All Father. For one week each winter Odin must rest, leaving Asgard vulnerable to attack. Many may try to claim Asgard, but their attempts are always thwarted by Thor (Matthew Wolf) and the other Asgardian warriors. With hopes of defeating Thor, Loki (Graham McTavish) has kidnapped Dr. Bruce Banner (Bryce Johnson) in order to take control of the Hulk, the only power to ever equal the God of Thunder's.

Animated Thor, Live-Action Thor, Motion Comic Thor: You've Been Thunderstruck

  • Pajiba
It seems odd that Thor, of all of Marvel's properties, is getting as much attention as it is. Not just the Kenneth Brannagh-directed film, but also a couple of other ways. Thor is getting a full-court press from Marvel in the days leading up to May 6th, the release date for the feature-length film that will serve as another entry into the pre-Avengers series of hero stories. I figured in the interest of brevity, we'd combine previews of all of the different entries into one place.

First of all, Marvel is also gearing up to release Thor: Tales Of Asgard, an anime-inspired animated film that tells of the early adventures of Thor and his adopted brother Loki. Matthew Wolf, who voiced Thor in the animated Hulk Vs. film, will once again reprise his role, with Rick Gomez as Loki. Here's the trailer:

And here's a brief clip:

I'm not blown away by it,
