Film Review: Ajji (2017) by Devashish Makhija

Probably one of the best independent Indian films of the year, Devashish Makhija’s “Ajji” takes a dark (noir) approach to the “Red Riding Hood” fairytale, by placing it in the Indian slums and inducing it with violence to the point of gore, and a number of pointy social remarks.

“Ajji” screened at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles

When little Manda fails to show up after being sent for a small chore in the night, her grandmother and a local prostitute begin to search for her, only to find her raped and dumped in a trash heap in her slum. As soon as they arrive home, the family informs Dastur, the local policeman of the sexual assault, with the girl almost immediately identifying the perpetrator as Dhavle, the son of the local governor. However, Dastur is not only unwilling to help, but actually threatens them to drop the whole thing,

“Zero Is Shah Rukh’s Career’s Best” – A Subhash K Jha Review

Zero

Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma

Directed by Aanand L Rai

When this achingly irreverent ode to misfits was over, I thought, how wonderful that Zero is dedicated to Sridevi. No more befitting homage could be paid to an entertainer who brought us smiles all through her career.

Bauua Singh of Meerut is like that only. He is a dwarf, and let’s not soften the blow by beating around the bush about his shortcoming. The brilliantly askew screenplay by Himanshu Sharma certainly doesn’t shy away from addressing disabilities. This is a film that calls a spade a spade and then shovels us a welter of speckled wisdom that I last saw in Forrest Gump. Zero is like a box of assorted chocolates. You never know what the feeling would be in the next one.

Indeed Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump would have chuckled approvingly at

“Toilet Ek Prem Katha Is A Directorial Triumph” – Subhash K Jha Review

Toilet : Ek Prem Katha

Starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Divyendu Sharma, Sudhir Pande & Anupam Kher

Directed by Shree Narayan Singh

There is a point of no return in the plot when we the audience become so immersed in the protagonist’s crusade for a better tomorrow that we are cheering and stomping our feet in encouragement for that bright sunshine-drenched tomorrow of which Sahir Ladhianvi dreamt in Pyasa and Phir Subah Hogi.

Our protagonist Madhav’s battle is not really reformatory in the way the great heroes of our times meant it to be. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Satyakam when the protagonist Dharmendra marries the rape victim he does it with the least amount of self-congratulations. In Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar’s mission to build a toilet for his wife is compared with Shah Jahan building the Taj Mahal for his wife.

I wonder who should feel

Hardhitting blunt riveting depiction of communal disharmony – Subhash K Jha Reviews ‘Dekh Tamasha Dekh’

Starring: Vinay Jain, Satish Kaushik, Tanvi Azmi, & hordes of other talent

Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan

Routinely, we love to sweep the truth about Hindu-Muslim relations under the carpet. Or simply sugar-coat it to make the actual volume of mutual distrust and animosity palatable to a nation steeped in escapism and self-delusion.

Dekh Tamasha Dekh(Dtd) directed by theatre legend Feroz Abbas Khan (of Tumhari Amrita fame) is a jolting wake-up call for a nation swept into a slumberous silence by the status quo. Put simply, we don’t want to face the reality about the friction that simmers just under the surface among the two communities. Dtd is perhaps the first Hindi film which ventures into the vista of vitriolic without the fear of offending the more refined sections of the audience who may not be comfortable watching the vanguards and trouble-makers of the two communities addressing each other with the harshest of epithets.
