Pennyworth Episode 3

Enter Batman’s mom. While Pennyworth immediately introduced the dry Thomas Wayne, the third episode brings in Martha Kane, the future mom of Bruce, and a very cool photojournalist/spy/No Name League member.

But I digress, because can we talk about the dog-man who walks through the frame in the pre-credits scene?

Alfred meets the Esme’s vicar father in some posh gentleman’s parlor, only to be rejected his blessing for their nuptials. Why? Because Esme, an heiress, is drawn to darkness and other perversions. As Alfred exits, we’re treated to a walk-on by a man in an animal costume that reminds one of the dog-man from The Shining.

Pennyworth Review: The Alfred You Always Wanted

If we could ever imagine a backstory for Batman's loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, Epix's new series Pennyworth is it.

The series was developed by Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, the creative team behind Fox's Gotham, and it dives into Alfred Pennyworth's life before Bruce Wayne and Batman.

Set in an alternate 1960s London, Alfie (as he was known back then) has just completed his tour of duty as a special forces soldier in the British Army.

He's working as a bouncer for a local nightclub and plans on opening his own security firm when he suddenly finds himself caught up in a world of espionage and intrigue.

‘Pennyworth’ Review: Batman’s Butler Begins In This Style-Heavy Prequel Series

‘Pennyworth’ Review: Batman’s Butler Begins In This Style-Heavy Prequel Series
The world needed a series about how Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) grew up to be Batman’s butler as much as it needs one about the tailor who sells Bruce Banner all those purple pants. But to its credit, Epix’s Pennyworth — from Gotham creator Bruno Heller and that show’s chief director, Danny Cannon — doesn’t particularly care about filling in blanks of the Bat mythos, even though Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas (Ben Aldridge), keeps crossing paths here with his future manservant. Rather, Heller is using the connection

TV Review: ‘Pennyworth’

TV Review: ‘Pennyworth’
Is there a law that says there must always be a certain number of Batman properties on air at all times?

Just as Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” films germinated a fandom that seemed to demand not merely a Ben Affleck Batman but also two different Joker-based franchise, so too did the conclusion of Fox’s “Gotham” seem to point the way forward for yet more stories of Bruce Wayne’s pals. Ahead of the forthcoming CWBatwoman” comes Epix’s “Pennyworth,” a prequel series about the adventures of future butler Alfred in his days as a security company proprietor going on adventures in swinging ’60s London.

In the pilot, screened at San Diego Comic Con for fans, there’s a pleasant vibe of derring-do and of odd boundary-pushing at work: Knighted by a young Queen Elizabeth II, Alfred (Jack Bannon) is sworn to secrecy about his valor by a grateful,
