‘Shaft’ Film Review: Old-School Swagger Meets Millennial Wokeness in Uneasy Crime-Comedy Mix
It’s always a little awkward to reexamine a beloved older film so rooted in its own era that the chance of it seeming somewhat barbaric today is inevitable. But our current culture seeks not only to revisit our past through a nostalgic lens but also to confront how history has enabled some of the toxicity and broken systems we struggle to dismantle now.

Rarely, though, has that reckoning been approached by a male filmmaker — in this case Tim Story — who aims to explore how we engage with images and dialogue we’ve been accustomed to from a hard-partying, system-overthrowing, womanizing hero better known as Shaft.

Nearly 50 years ago, this titular renegade private eye, first played by Richard Roundtree, sauntered onto the big screen with his own badass theme song, knocking out racist white police officers and hooking up with every woman who crossed his path. That’s what he

Jane By Design DVD Review And Giveaway Plus Interview With Erica Dasher

ABC Family has another hit on its hands, though it may be diving further and further toward ABC Family (Women), and Jane by Design has opted for the ultra-quick DVD release. Hitting just two weeks after the season finale, the DVD doesn’t offer bonus features, but gives you the chance to jump into the show, in case you didn’t get on board until after everyone was talking about it.

The show, though certainly mainly geared toward a certain age demographic, delivers solid writing, and layered characters. Like many of the shows currently airing on ABC Family, Jane by Design rises above the expectations it likely creates on paper.

16 year-old Jane thinks she’s applying to be an unpaid intern for a fashion powerhouse, but is mistakenly interviewed to be an executive assistant to one of the biggest names in the game, and at an impressive salary to boot.

'Jane By Design' star Erica Dasher shares her personal style rules

Style is, rightfully so, important for any young actress. And that’s doubly the case when said actress is starring in a super-fashion-conscious show like ABC Family’s Jane By Design. The dramedy finds the young Erica Dasher (pictured here) playing high schooler Jane Quimby, the naive, yet oddly competent, underage assistant to Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell), a fashion maven fierce enough to give The Devil Wears Prada’s Miranda Priestly a run for her money.

In celebration of all that fashion and in anticipation of tonight’s new episode of Jane at 9 p.m., “The Finger Bowl” — which
