20th Century Women (Mike Mills)

That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented. Without ever hitting a tonal misstep, Mills’ latest feature takes place in a short period of time within relatively few locations, yet seems to pick up every wavelength of the human experience. There are also few funnier

“Fast Color” Refreshingly Blends Genres

There are surprisingly few attempts to do small scale superhero stories. Almost every time out, it’s blockbuster or bust. Even supposedly smaller scale offerings are still huge, like Deadpool or Logan. Even Chronicle was hardly an independent title. It’s a missed opportunity, too. So, when along comes something like Fast Color, an indie that explores similar themes and topics, it’s a breath of fresh air for sure. Armed with really strong work from Gugu Mbatha-Raw, you’ll often forget that you’re not watching something epic. Her chops more than make up for the occasional narrative shortcoming. This movie isn’t what you’re expecting, but that’s a compliment to all involved. The film is a science fiction drama/thriller, though in the way it’s presented, it’s essentially also a superhero origin story of sorts. When we meet Ruth (Mbatha-Raw), we can tell she

‘Fast Color’ Review: Indie Superhero Movie Takes on Race, Empowerment

‘Fast Color’ Review: Indie Superhero Movie Takes on Race, Empowerment
Move over, Captain Marvel, there’s a new female superhero in town. Fast Color doesn’t have the budget, the FX bells-and-whistles or even the inclination to take on the Brie Larson McU blockbuster. But the tightly-focused origin story of Ruth, played with ferocity and feeling by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is still one hell of a heroic odyssey.

The world is suffering from the parched effects of eight years of drought when Ruth, who’s been running away from the earth-quaking powers she never wanted, returns home to her remote family farm.

Movie Review – Fast Color (2018)

Fast Color, 2018.

Directed by Julia Hart.

Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, Saniyya Sidney, Christopher Denham, and David Strathairn.

Synopsis:

A woman is forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered. Years after having abandoned her family, the only place she has left to hide is home.

It is movingly fitting that one of the only superhuman-based films centered on women focuses on the artistry of creation and the beauty that can come from such a thing (both in terms of nurturing offspring and vibrant digital effects) rather than apocalyptic destruction and its fallout from squaring off against the same tired cookie cutter villains played out on screen for decades now. This is made all the more impressive considering that the events take place in a dried up dustbowl devoid of rain and water, slowly but surely killing off the human race.

Fast Color (a collaborative project

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a Superhuman in the First Trailer for ‘Fast Color’

As superhero films dominate the Hollywood tentpole marketplace, smaller productions are finding more interesting ways to expand the storytelling boundaries of such tales. This year, Julia Hart follows up her excellent drama Miss Stevens (which was a break-out role for Timothée Chalamet) with her own take on superheroes in Fast Color. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a woman with special abilities that must go on the run, the film premiered at SXSW last year and now the first trailer has debuted ahead of a March release.

“My husband and I came up with the idea for the movie when we became parents,” Hart tells EW. “I just felt this superhuman strength that I had never felt before when I became a mother. So, the idea for the movie came from this notion that mothers are superheroes. I realized that I’d never seen a movie where there was actually a superhero who was a mother.

‘Fast Color’ Trailer: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Puts an Indie Film Spin on the Superhero Genre
Gugu Mbatha-Raw has delivered strong performances in “Beyond the Lights,” “Belle,” and the Emmy-winning “Black Mirror” episode “San Junipero,” but the actress takes her talents to the next level in the upcoming “Fast Color.” The drama marks the latest directorial effort from Julia Hart, best known for her breakout 2016 debut “Miss Stevens,” starring Lily Rabe and Timothée Chalamet. For this go-around, writer-director Hart has filtered the superhero genre through a grounded, low budget independent film lens.

When her powers are discovered, the woman is forced to abandon her family in order to protect them. Years later, her mission to remain unseen brings her back home.
