Hall Pass and The Wedding Ringer actress Nicky Whelan is set to play opposite Neil Brown Jr. in Last Night in Rozzie, an indie drama which is being directed by Sean Gannet. Brown, Jr. stars as Ronnie Russo, a successful but troubled attorney who returns to his Boston hometown at the request of his dying friend, years after they as children killed his abusive father and covered it up. Whelan’s character is Pattie, a single mother with a tortured past, who must decide whether to let her past dictate her present day integrity with her son. Her additional co-stars are Mike O’Malley, Kevin Chapman, and Jeremy Sisto. Joseph Stephans is producing the pic, which is being financed by Big Show Pictures. McDonough and Kris Meyer serve as executive producers. Whelan, who can next be seen opposite Bruce Willis in the action pic, Trauma Center, is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment and Innovative Artists.

Mike C. Manning is among the cast of Barry Alexander Brown’s Son of the South, joining Lucas Till, Lucy Hale, Lex Scott Davis, Julia Ormond, Cedric the Entertainer, Jake Abel, Dexter Darden, and Shamier Anderson. The pic, based on Bob Zellner’s autobiography The Wrong Side of Murder Creek, is about the true-life story of Zellner (Till), an Alabama native and grandson of a Birmingham Klansman who is pulled into the center of the civil rights movement. The spring and summer of 1961 challenged the 22-year old to rethink his beliefs as he witnessed the heroism of John Lewis during the Montgomery Freedom Riders riot in May of that year. Manning will play Townsend Ellis, best friend of Zellner who struggles to support his friend during his growing involvement with the civil rights movement. Bobby Roth Directing ‘The Last Rescue’; Catherine Davis Joins ‘Trauma Center’ – Film Briefs
Bobby Roth has been hired to direct The Last Rescue, a political thriller about a seasoned Muslim freelance journalist and a Hollywood movie star who form an unlikely partnership to heroically smuggle children out of a besieged Syrian village. Eric J. Adams and Sam Khoze are producing the indie, which was co-written by Todd Tavolazzi, Roth, and Nicholas Roth based Tavolazzi’s novel Looking Into the Sun. Simone White, Lisa Osinloye and Ojan Missaghi of New York-based Ten Ten Global Media will serve as exec producers. Roth has directed numerous episodes for TV including Prison Break, Criminal Minds and Lost. Adams, who is also a screenwriter and investigative journalist, served on the production team and wrote the screenplay for Supremacy, starring Danny Glover and Mahershala Ali. Khoze is the producer behind 1st Born, with Val Kilmer and Denise Richards.

Nicky Whelan Cast in ‘Trauma Center’ Opposite Bruce Willis
Actress Nicky Whelan has been cast to star opposite Bruce Willis in the upcoming action movie “Trauma Center.”

Whelan, whose past credits include the Farrelly brothers’ “Hall Pass,” “The Wedding Ringer,” “Knight of Cups” and “Left Behind,” will play Madison opposite Willis’ Lt. Wakes in the film.

Trauma Center” was written by Paul da Silva and is being produced by MoviePass’ Randall Emmett, George Furla and Lydia Hull.

The production begins principal photography this month in Miami.

The title represents part of a three-picture deal Willis recently signed with MoviePass Films — representing a longtime working relationship the actor has with Emmett and Furla, with whom he’s made more than 10 films, including 2011’s “Catch .44.”

Matt Eskandari is directing.

Whelan is repped by Luber Roklin Entertainment and Innovative Artists.

Movie Critic Richard Roeper Gets Suspended for Buying Twitter Followers

Just a few months after The New York Times broke the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal, the publication has broken another scandal wide open, which may have cost a prominent film critic his job. The Chicago Sun-Times announced that film critic Richard Roeper has been suspended by the newspaper, after his name was mentioned among many prominent actors, athletes, influencers and many more, who have used a shady company known as Devumi to purchase fake Twitter followers to enhance his social media presence. Here's what Chicago Sun-Times editor-in-chief Chris Fusco said in a statement.

"We became aware over the weekend of issues relating to Rich Roeper's Twitter account. We're investigating these issues. We will not be publishing any reviews or columns by Rich until this investigation is complete."

As of now, Richard Roeper has over 224,000 Twitter followers, but there is no indication as to how many of those followers are fake.

High School Horror Comedy Tragedy Girls Coming to Blu-ray, DVD & VOD on February 2nd

It's been listed on several of Daily Dead's "Favorites of 2017" features, and soon you'll be able to experience Tragedy Girls for yourself, as its home media release has been confirmed for early February.

According to Amazon and confirmed by the Tragedy Girls Twitter account, which retweeted an article on the news by Bloody Disgusting, Tragedy Girls will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by Gunpowder & Sky on February 2nd, the same day it comes out on VOD platforms.

We've been very excited for Daily Dead readers to see Tragedy Girls since our own Heather Wixson reviewed it at SXSW, so February 2nd is a day you should mark down on your calendars if you're looking to check out the next big horror movie that might be mentioned at the water cooler in coming weeks.

Described as a cross between Scream and Clueless, this "biting satire" is about two girls at a high school who decide to start killing people themselves in order to gain more social media followers. Yeah, sounds a bit crazy but it actually looks good. Starring Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand, along with Josh Hutcherson, Craig Robinson, Kevin Durand, Jack Quaid, Timothy V. Murphy, Nicky Whelan, Austin Abrams, Kerry Rhodes, as well as Mary Carmen Lopez. This would also play nice as a double feature with Ingrid Goes West, another smart satire about social media obsession. This does look hilarious, might be a devious horror gem uncovered this year.
