'So You Think You Can Dance': Season finale recap

'So You Think You Can Dance': Season finale recap
Our top four dancers have done all they can and the votes are in... but which two will be named the winners of So You Think You Can Dance? After welcoming the previous top 16 contenders, here they are: Eliana, Chehon, Tiffany and Cyrus! The winners might have already been chosen, but before we find out the names of the lucky victors, we've got a two-hour show to get through! And because it's the finale, things are even bigger than normal - joining Nigel and Mary on the panel are (breathe in): Lil' C, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen and Tyce Diorio. Phew! Cat Deeley's looking absolutely stunning and it seems Nigel's getting a bit overexcited, because he's started shouting: "Gangnam style!" So perhaps it's best if we move straight on to the first group routine, featuring the entire top 20. The dance, choreographed by Christopher Scott and (more)

"So You Think You Can Dance" Finale: Survival of the Hottest

And the winners... of So You Think You Can Dance... are... Probably More Tired Than Any Of Us Can Imagine! Hooray! They Surely Want To Be Left Alone! Wee! Seriously, stop tweeting at them, Christina Applegate.

We'll get to the results in a bit, but first: I started this season by comparing So You Think You Can Dance to American Idol, and now, I will gleefully contrast the two Fox juggernauts. Every American Idol finale feels like a painful elegy, a disturbing culmination where a frail white dude wins everything and Jennifer Holliday chews up the runner-up's face. It's a bloodletting. Meanwhile, every Sytycd finale feels like a quaint graduation ceremony at an arts academy. The students present themselves and receive funky diplomas from their professors Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, teary-eyed dandy Adam Shankman, your elegant great aunt Debbie Allen, smirking prom queen Tyce Diorio, and the Real Excited Lil C. It's just cute.

'So You Think You Can Dance': Las Vegas callbacks recap

'So You Think You Can Dance': Las Vegas callbacks recap
The So You Think You Can Dance auditions are over, and if the hopefuls thought that was the hard bit, they ain't seen nothing yet. We're in Las Vegas for the callbacks and the word "gruelling" seems pretty appropriate. After all, we have to cut 181 contestants down to just 20! There are eight rounds ahead - solos, hip-hop, broadway, jazz, groups, ballroom, contemporary and final solos - and of course there are judges to impress! Say hello to Lil' C, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Tyce Diorio, Mary Murphy and, of course, Nigel Lythgoe. Solos The dancers are all screaming and excited, but all it takes is for Nigel to tell them that if their solo doesn't stand up they'll be sent home, and suddenly they have rather glum faces (maybe it's all the talk of "massive cuts"). Still, time to get things going! We meet Hampton Williams (more)

Dancers brave a week of grueling callback auditions as 'Sytycd' narrows down the field in Las Vegas.

While every dancer might think they have the moves, less than two dozen make it to the top 20 on the dance-competition series "So You Think You Can Dance." The path to that coveted spot requires a pass through the grueling callback auditions in Vegas, the first of which was underway on Wednesday night's episode.Hundreds of dancers pushed, pulled and injured their way into and out of the show, as they endured a week of intense choreography that tested their skills in all the major styles of dance featured on "Sytycd."The week began with solos, graduated to group routines and culminated with 35 dancers making it to the final week before the top 20 announcement. Some had to "dance for their

Katelyn Mullen: 'So You Think You Can Dance' Premiere Recap: The Most Adorable And Scariest Auditions Ever
I laughed, I cried, I shrieked, I squealed ... clearly Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" has made its triumphant return for Season 9.

While the show is changing things up this season -- dropping down from two nights a week, to one night (and I'll be honest I'm apprehensive about the new format) -- I resolved to stop the nail biting until June 27th when they'll announce the Top 20, and just enjoy the auditions. After all, it has been practically a year since I've craughed (the combination of crying and laughing) along with Mary Murphy, developed an even bigger crush on Nigel Lythgoe and watched in awe as the contestants throw themselves all around the "Sytycd" stage for our own personal enjoyment.

Join me each week as I present my comments, questions and concerns from each episode, without any technical dance knowledge, and heck, no actual dance skills ... just straight

'So You Think You Can Dance': 2012's Season 9 kicks off with auditions

With "American Idol's" winner -- Phillip Phillips -- declared, Fox and producer Nigel Lythgoe are ready to move on to the summer portion of their reality competition entertainment: "So You Think You Can Dance's" Season 9.

Host Cat Deeley returns to shepherd the competition through the summer while Lythgoe and Mary Murphy are returning to their usual spots behind the judges' table. But, there are a few changes in store for this season -- which isn't surprising to die-hard "Sytycd" fans. Let's review them before the action kicks off tonight with the first audition show:

It takes two: Two winners -- one male and one female -- will be declared this season for the first time in the show's history. While that's fabulous news for the 2012 crop of dancers we wish it had been a possibility last year so Marko Germar could have joined champion Melanie Moore in the winners' circle.

"So You Think You Can Dance" is back and kicking — literally. Limbs flew left, right, center and even behind the head, as season nine of the dance competition premiered Thursday night (May 24) with the first round of auditions in New York and Texas. Dancers from all over the world auditioned for a golden ticket to Sin City, showcasing a dynamic range of artists, styles and emotional stories.

Both cities delivered a plethora of highly skilled, highly entertaining and highly ridiculous talent. The highlight of the first auditions was not the usual crowd-pleasing contemporary and hip-hop styles, but rather, unique and inventive forms of dance, including animation, lyrical freestyle and ... exorcism?

'So You Think You Can Dance': Season 9 promises 2 winners and more Jesse Tyler Ferguson

"So You Think You Can Dance" fans won't be surprised to learn that, yet again, the Nigel Lythgoe-run passion project is changing the game on its dancing contestants. For the first time, two winners will be named at the end of Season 9 -- one male and one female.

The bad news for "Sytycd" fans: Fox cut the results show, so there will only be one dose each week.

How will that affect viewer voting? As Zap2it previously reported, ouples at risk after a prior week's performance will be asked to perform solo routines the next week then the judges will decide who is eliminated.

The good news: Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family") will be returning to the judge's table along with other guests, including Debbie Allen, Lil' C, Tyce Diorio and Adam Shankman. Host Cat Deeley, along with full-time judges Lythgoe and Mary Murphy will also be back for the summer.

Video: "So You Think You Can Dance" Judges Talk Vegas Callbacks

The ninth season premiere of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance is just around the corner (May 24th!) and there are changes afoot. The dance competition series, where past contestants included Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Mark Kanemura, Robert Roldan and Alex Wong, will now only air one two-hour episode each week (instead of one performance episode and a separate results show) when it returns.

Producers are still figuring out exactly how that will work in terms of when the dancers will be eliminated during the broadcast. However, while they work that out, things were already heating up in Las Vegas recently when nationwide callbacks took place at Planet Hollywood.  The judges had to make some hard decisions as to who would make the cut and be in the running to be crowned America's Favorite Dancer.

AfterElton was there in Vegas and grabbed some time with host Cat Deeley, judges Mary Murphy,

'So You Think You Can Dance' Crowns Melanie Moore as Winner

The final result of "So You Think You Can Dance" season 8 did not fall from predictions. Having been judges' favorite since her audition, Melanie Moore was announced as the champion on the Thursday (August 11) show, with 47 percent of total vote.

Another female dancer on the top four, Sasha Mallory, was placed second. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Marko Germar, who once made Lady GaGa cry with his routine on Top 8 performance night, and 25-year-old Tadd Gadduang were the third placer and fourth placer respectively.

On the final result show, all top 20 dancers from this season returned to stage to perform. The judges, that include Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Robin Antin and Lil' C, picked the routines that were performed by the contestants that night.

Later, the top 10 dancers from the season are scheduled to embark on a 32-city tour on September 17. The stops include Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City

"So You Think You Can Dance" Recap - Christina Applegate Guest Judges

Christina Applegate of Kelly Bundy and Samantha Who fame joined the judging panel last night, and she actually had a bit more dance cred than most guest judges this season, having been nominated for a Tony for the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. She wound up being a pretty competent judge, although at this point, with only six great dancers left, there's not a lot to actually criticize.

But me, I'm sure I can find something!

Like maybe Lil' C. Oh Lil' C. Can you just not talk and just sit there and be pretty?. Because you sure are pretty. (Or "buck" as you would say). But those inane extended rhymes you do with the highfalutin' adjectives make me want to tear my hair (and your cornrows) out. How I wonder do you keep getting invited back to the judging panel?

Another thing worth complaining about: choreographers that use a lot of gimmicky props.

'So You Think You Can Dance': It's Melanie's competition to lose

One week out from the finale, the skill level of the remaining six dancers competing for the "So You Think You Can Dance" title is painfully good. The kind of good that makes judges and viewers cry (Sasha!) and allows one dancer so magnificently gifted to come up with the best solo ever danced on the show just moments before she stepped on stage.

On Wednesday (Aug. 3), Caitlynn, Marko, Melanie, Ricky, Sasha and Tadd showed us what it takes to get to the highest levels of the competition. All six dancers possess incredible agility, impeccable technical skills and heart to spare. But only one dancer has that little something extra that sets her apart from the rest.

I mean, really, it's as if Melanie was literally born to dance. Since the top 20 were picked so many weeks ago in Las Vegas, this competition has been Melanie's to lose and she hasn't lost us yet.
