Maiara is proficient in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Her father is American, of German, Irish, English, and French-Canadian descent. Her mother is Brazilian.
She pronounces her first name as "MY-Ah-Da" (The R in her name is pronounced as a D. As interviewed on the "Doctor Phil Show" dated March 10, 2011).
Unlike her character in Mean Girls 2 (2011), she was bullied in school. Bullies gave her the nickname "My Twigga", a take on her name Maiara (pronounced "MY-Ah-Da"), as she was teased for being small and skinny.

Maiara appeared in american record producer/DJ TOKIMONSTA music video for her track "Go with it" (2013),a collaboration with american singer/songwriter MNDR. Via twitter Walsh stated "Go with it was a really 'dope' song''.
