Screen Media has acquired the North American distribution rights to “Liam Gallagher: As It Was,” a rock documentary about the career of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

Screen Media has acquired North American rights to Charlie Lightening and Gavin Fitzgerald’s feature documentary “Liam Gallagher: As It Was.” The film follows the former Oasis frontman as he finds himself on the periphery of the rock ‘n’ roll world after years spent at the white hot center of the music world. Screen Media will release the film in the fall and will time it with the debut Gallagher’s upcoming second solo album.

Liam Gallagher: As It Was” premiered at the Cannes Market this week. Lightening, who previously directed the video for Gallagher’s video “Chinatown,” and his co-director Fitzgerald were granted behind-the-scenes access as Gallagher mounted a comeback. For years, Oasis topped the charts with catchy songs such as “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova,” but Gallagher also dominated headlines with his loutish behavior and feuds with his brother and bandmate Noel. Cannes: Hit Docs Fuel Competitive Market
If the Cannes Market’s Doc Corner, a hub for feature documentary filmmakers and executives, feels more crowded this year, it may have to do with the strong theatrical performance of features docs such as “Free Solo” and “Amazing Grace,” and the slew of U.S. and international titles acquired or admired at Sundance, SXSW (“For Sama”) and Tribeca (“The Apollo”). The combination of the box office and quality product is stoking a competitive marketplace not just in acquisitions but, increasingly, in pre-production involvement.

“With a clear acceleration this decade, feature docs have imposed themselves as a major, indispensable part of the film industry, generating business and revenues, and enabling a strong ecosystem to structure itself, with specialized festivals playing a major role,” says Pierre-Alexis Chevit, project manager of Doc Corner and its conference-style Doc Day on May 21.

Chevit says one of the major talking points in the sector is “inclusion and diversity,

‘Whitney’ Trailer: Whitney Houston Documentary Aims To Hit All The Notes
Kevin Macdonald’s Whitney is having its world premiere tonight out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, and Miramax and Roadside Attractions are priming the pump by unveiling the official trailer for the documentary that digs deep into the life of Whitney Houston. The movie hits U.S. theaters on July 6.

Houston broke more music biz records than any other female in history, selling more than 200 million albums globally and becoming the first to chart seven consecutive No. 1 U.S. No. 1 singles. But there was a darker side to the success, as her career gave way to erratic behavior, scandals and eventually her death in 2012 at age 48.

As the trailer hints, the docu is unflinching and uses previously unseen archival footage, demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives and interviews with friends and family who were there for Houston’s ups and downs.

Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn and Lisa Erspamer are producers.
