  • Nerdly
Stars: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Bonnie Aarons, Ingrid Bisu, Charlotte Hope, Sandra Teles, August Maturo, Jack Falk, Lynnette Gaza, Ani Sava, Michael Smiley | Written by Gary Dauberman | Directed by Corin Hardy

Corin Hardy’s The Nun is the latest chapter in the ever-expanding and highly successful horror universe in that of ‘The Conjuring.’

The character of the Nun, or Valak, was first explored in James Wan’s The Conjuring 2 back in 2016. Initially, a simple CGI villain was retconned in post-production and reshoots by Wan himself were conducted to give the villain a far more evil entity and in its place birthed the Nun. A highly lucrative and incredibly foreseeing addition which came to be a highly sought after and rich commodity within the horror community, leading Warner Bros to explore the roots of Valak in its own inevitable spin-off and two years later here we are with the highly anticipated final product.

The Nun Lacks Soul: A Film Review

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray copy of this film was provided by Warner Bros. Director: Corin Hardy. Writers: Gary Dauberman, James Wan. Cast: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Ingrid Bisu and Bonnie Aarons. The Nun is the fifth film in The Conjuring franchise. This series of films has spawned many offshoots, including the Annabelle movies. Gary Dauberman, the writer here, also wrote one of this critic's favourites - Annabelle: Creation (2017). This latest film brings James Wan back to the series as producer and co-writer. But this film, a spin-off of The Conjuring 2 and the aforementioned Annabelle: Creation is a bit of a soulless wreck. In a remote Abbey, a Duke and sorcerer has opened a portal to Hell. And, the writers have forgotten what makes something evil and something else good. Outside of the missing plot and morality, even the characters are nearly forgotten (no real backstories), making The Nun

The Nun becomes the highest-grossing instalment in The Conjuring Universe

It may not have been a hit with critics, but that certainly hasn’t put audiences off the latest chapter in The Conjuring Universe with The Nun becoming the highest-grossing instalment in the horror franchise.

This past weekend saw the Corin Hardy-directed film pushing its global total to $330 million, overtaking the previous series best of $320 million set by The Conjuring 2 in 2016.

The Conjuring franchise is going from strength to strength, with its five instalments grossing over $1.5 billion at the global box office to date.

Next up from the series is the as-yet-untitled Annabelle 3, which last week cast Mckenna Grace (Gifted) as the young daughter of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), while The Conjuring 3 is expected to follow after that.

Updates on The Conjuring 3, Annabelle 3 and The Crooked Man

With the latest chapter of The Conjuring Universe, The Nun, proving to be another solid hit for Warner Bros. at the box office (and taking the series beyond a combined $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office), producer Peter Safran and writer Gary Dauberman have been providing an update on several planned future instalments in the horror franchise.

Firstly, speaking to Cinema Blend, Safran has said that The Conjuring 3 is “actually coming along great. David Leslie Johnson is working on the screenplay, and I feel pretty confident they will have that one up and running next year.”

Before we get to The Conjuring 3, there’s a third Annabelle movie to look forward to on July 3rd, 2019, and Dauberman – who’ll also be making his directorial debut on the film – has offered a few details on the plot and where it fits in the Conjuring timeline.

Interview with The Nun’s Jonas Bloquet

  • DailyDead
While much of the attention on The Nun has been focused on Taissa Farmiga, Demián Bichir, and Bonnie Aarons, Jonas Bloquet is an integral part of the story and has a fun role as “Frenchie,” balancing between comic relief and capable, demon-fighting hero. I recently had a chance to catch up with Jonas, who told me about his love of The Conjuring series, joining the cast, and filming in Romania:

How did you get involved with The Nun? How did the script come your way and what did you think when you read it?

Jonas Bloquet: For years, my manager kept telling me, "You have to come to Los Angeles. I want to introduce you to the casting directors." A year and a half ago I came to Los Angeles and I had one audition, and that one audition was for The Nun. It went great. I had to self-tape back in France,

Review: The Nun (2018)

It is with a degree of surprise that we have seen the development of The Conjuring universe over the last few years. Starting with the 2013 smash horror hit The Conjuring (inspired by the case studies of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren) director James Wan put the wicked wheels in motion for a horror franchise and since then we have had demonic doll Annabelle (from the first film) inspire two movies of her own and Wan deliver a 2016 Conjuring sequel. Now, after scaring the ‘bee-jesus’ out of audiences, as a side-character in James Wan’s aforementioned excellent The Conjuring 2 (also known as The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist), demon Valak (or ‘The Nun’) returns in her own spin-off origin film.

Like 2014’s Annabelle, The Nun is an instalment in the series that feels less deep, emotive or impactful than its franchise brethren but despite the script borrowing from cliché,

The Nun to nab highest opening for The Conjuring Universe

Even with fairly negative reviews, The Nun is scaring up an impressive opening weekend at the box office. The horror film is estimated to bring in a whopping $50 million, a franchise best for The Conjuring universe. New Line’s The Nun earned an estimated $21.1 million on Friday, adding to its solid Thursday night haul of $5.4 million. The gothic horror earned $20.2 million from 60 international markets Friday, bringing the overseas haul to $32.1 million.

Friday Box Office: ‘The Nun’ Jump-Scares Its Way to a Monster $22.4 Million Debut

If the last three weeks of Crazy Rich Asians-dominated box office reports were a downright holy and righteous period of light and positivity, here comes demonic Gothic horror The Nun—poppining out of the shadows accompanied by a very jarring music cue—to possess moviegoer's attention. Warner Bros.' 1952-set spookshow grabbed $22.4 on Friday, gliding toward an estimated $50 million opening weekend. Here’s How ‘The Nun’ Connects to the Rest of the ‘Conjuring’ Universe

Here’s How ‘The Nun’ Connects to the Rest of the ‘Conjuring’ Universe
(Note: This post contains spoilers for “The Nun,” specifically its ending. Read on at your own risk!)

The Nun” is technically a prequel in the ever-expanding “Conjuring” film universe, telling something of an origin story for Valak, the super-scary demon nun of “The Conjuring 2.” But thanks to various teases, we know Valak is tied a little more deeply into all the movies surrounding “The Conjuring” than it might have seemed before.

The events of “The Nun” take place in 1952 in a Romanian convent that sees some spooky things happen. A miracle-hunting priest, Father Burke (Demián Bichir), and a young nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) are sent to investigate the place. Spoiler alert: Valak’s there, and things get pretty scary.

‘The Nun’ Review: Unanswered Prayers

I love the films of the "Conjuring Universe." With the true life stories from Ed and Lorraine Warren serving as a backdrop, these films have scared and thrilled audiences and critics alike for the better part of this decade and they look to keep going. Warner Bros. has fleshed out the universe with side stories spun off from the two Conjuring films, one focused on the demonic doll, Annabelle, first seen in the opening of the first Conjuring film, and the now the other, The Nun, which gives the backstory to the evil painting of Valak from 2016's The Conjuring 2.

The Nun is centered on an old abbey in Romania. As the film opens, two nuns are on a mission within the walls of the abbey, armed with a special key, seeking a much needed relic, and afraid of what's behind a door marked in latin that "God Ends Here.
