Emmy spotlight: ‘Modern Family’ deserves a return to Best Comedy Series race with its best season in years
After “Modern Family” won a record-tying five consecutive Emmy victories for Best Comedy Series, the laffer soon fell out of favor with voters, dropping out of the main categories entirely last year. But it deserves a return to the race for its 10th season, the best since the show’s glory days.

For years, there wasn’t an eligible Emmy category “Modern Family” didn’t compete in, let alone win. In addition to its series victories, the show would regularly take home prizes for writing, directing and acting for Ty Burrell (2011 and 2014), Eric Stonestreet (2010 and 2012) and Julie Bowen (2011 and 2012), racking up 21 trophies out of 67 bids. Yet its fortunes began to dip in the sixth season, where it went from receiving double-digit nomination tallies to just six. ‘Alex Inc’ Canceled by ABC After One Season
ABC has canceled its freshman comedy “Alex, Inc.

The single-camera half-hour was based on Alex Blumber’s podcast entitled “StartUp” about a man who quits his job to start his own company. Zach Braff executive produced and starred in the series and also directed a few episodes.

The series also starred Michael Imperioli, Tiya Sircar, Hillary Anne Matthews, Elisha Henig and Audyssie James. Matt Tarses served as executive producer and writer; John Davis and John Fox were executive producers from Davis Entertainment; Blumberg, Chris Gilberti and Matt Lieber from Gimlet Media also executive produced in association with Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios.

“Alex, Inc” averaged a lackluster 3.5 million total viewers and a 0.87 rating in the 18-49 demo.

ABC previously cancelled both “Quanitco” and “Designated Survivor” earlier on Friday, while freshman comedy “Splitting Up Together” had been renewed. ABC has also renewed “The Goldbergs,” “The Good Doctor,” “Grey’s Anatomy,

ABC is unsubscribing to Alex, Inc.: The Zach Braff comedy has been cancelled after just one season, TVLine has learned.

Braff starred as Alex Schuman, a veteran radio producer who quit his job to launch his own podcast company with the support of his beloved wife Rooni (The Good Place‘s Tiya Sircar) and their two children. Along for the ride was his cousin/business partner Eddie (The SopranosMichael Imperioli) and kooky segment producer Deirdre (Drunk History‘s Hillary Anne Matthews).

New Zach Braff comedy gets series order for ABC

According to Deadline, ABC has given a series order to the Zach Braff pilot Start Up (which is currently untitled due to Crackle launching a drama series StartUp), with the single-camera comedy set to premiere on the network later this year.

The series, written by Matt Tarses, a former co-executive producer on Scrubs, is inspired by the podcast StartUp and stars Braff as Alex Schuman, “a brilliant radio journalist, husband and father of two who is about to do something crazy—quit his job and start his own company. He quickly discovers it’s going to be a lot harder than he thought.”

Braff, who also directed the pilot, will be joined in the cast of the series by Tiya Sircar (Star Wars Rebels), Hillary Anne Matthews (Single by 30), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Elisha Henig (Future World) and Audyssie James (Sesame Street).
