On the Basis of Sex

With two major movie accolades in one year, Chief Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the real Wonder Woman, bar none. Mimi Leder’s dramatic biography takes on a relatively small piece of Ms. Ginsburg’s life, but the simplifications aren’t a problem. It does have the feeling of an old-fashioned celebratory bio, with colorful characters and hiss-able villains. But Leder and screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman never lose track of their central theme.

On the Basis of Sex, 2018.

Directed by Mimi Leder.

Starring Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston, Kathy Bates, Cailee Spaeny, Jack Reynor, Stephen Root, Chris Mulkey, Gary Werntz, Francis X. McCarthy and Ben Carlson.

Synopsis:

The true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.

On the Basis of Sex is a timely telling of an inspirational true story, that of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones), the second-ever female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and a feminist icon. It both demands and earns its place on the screen.

With all the upheaval in both international and – more specifically, for here – American politics, a no-nonsense, hard-working and liberal icon such as Ruth Bader Ginsburg being made the star of her own biopic is a welcome distraction.

On the Basis of Sex: Felicity Jones Channels Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Don Kaye Jan 10, 2019

On the Basis of Sex star Felicity Jones tells us how she approached playing the role of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg may be the most well-known and recognized Supreme Court Justice of the modern era, and the new film On the Basis of Sex chronicles her career and details the landmark case that she and her husband Martin took on, which changed the course of their lives and the courts’ view of gender discrimination for decades since.

In an era when women were expected to stay home and fulfill the typical gender roles of housewife and mother, Ruth fought against a legal establishment that was firmly in the grip of men to teach, practice law and eventually ascend all the way to the Supreme Court, on which she was seated in 1993 and still serves today.

On The Basis Of Sex – Review

Happy 2019 film fans! What better way to ring in another 365 days of movies than to start things off with a good origin story? I’m thinking a thought balloon is popping over your head with the phrase “What the-?”. Yes, January’s a bit early for the arrival of this cinema year’s new crop of superheroes. Indeed, Captain Marvel flies into the multiplex in early March, with another Cap..whoops, that’s another tangled legal tale, hero Shazam hot on her, um, boots a few weeks later. Those crusaders debuted in the comic pages, while this new film concerns a real-life hero (with many calling her a true superhero). This new movie bio, much like 2017’s Marshall focuses on an early case, before fame and a national position. And like that former film, this is all about a Supreme Court Justice, one that is still “on the bench”. A

Synopsis:

The story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her struggles for equal rights and what she had to overcome in order to become a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

While drafting the all-important briefing for the game-changing Charles E. Moritz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue case, an assistant brings to the attention of Ruth Bader Ginsburg that the frequent usage of the word “sex” gives off the wrong impression to the all-male staff of judges, most of which likely can’t help but think with their lower body parts sharply turning their minds to the other definition of the word. Midconversation, they decide to change the word to “gender”, even though it means

On the Basis of Sex: Armie Hammer Plays the Man Behind Rbg

Don Kaye Dec 24, 2018

Armie Hammer tells us why the role of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s husband gave him creative freedom in On the Basis of Sex.

While Ruth Bader Ginsburg may be the most well-known and recognized Supreme Court Justice of the modern era, less has been said in recent years about her late husband, Martin Ginsburg. The new film On the Basis of Sex chronicles Ruth’s career and details the landmark case that she and Martin took on which changed the course of their lives and the courts’ view of gender discrimination.

Married to Ruth for 46 years (until his death in 2010), Martin was one of the best tax lawyers of his time and an accomplished legal scholar in his own right. Yet in an era when women were expected to stay home and fulfill the typical gender roles of housewife and mother, Martin and Ruth enjoyed a truly

Women’s Image Awards nominations: ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ ‘Little Women’ lead

The Women’s Image Awards has announced its 2018 nominations, with the BBC miniseries “Little Women” that aired on PBS’ “Masterpiece” series earning a leading six bids on the TV side. As for films, “Mary Queen of Scots” secured five spots on the ballot, followed by the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Can Your Ever Forgive Me,” both with four.

Given the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement’s push against sexual harassment and lack of equal opportunity for women in Hollywood, the fact that an organization like Women’s Image Awards exists is more important than ever. The group that is celebrating its 20th anniversary has just announced its nominations in 18 categories. The TV and film nominees are selected from a field of submissions from networks and studios.

Mychael Danna on getting ‘thrown into the deep end’ when he scored ‘On the Basis of Sex’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Mychael Danna got “thrown into the deep end” when he agreed to score Mimi Leder’s “On the Basis of Sex.” Leder had already shot the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic and temped it with Danna’s scores from “Moneyball” (2011) and “Capote” (2005) when she reached out to Danna, who immediately came onboard.

“I absolutely loved it and found it super inspiring from the moment I saw it,” Danna said at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Composers panel, moderated by this author (watch the exclusive video above). “Often I like to start at the beginning of a film and work my way all the way through. I like the orchestra to play it that way to, so people discover the theme and it kind of unfolds naturally and I like to write it that way.”

But he didn’t get to do it this time because Leder was stuck on a pivotal moment in the drama,
