Pet lovers in Australia 'ditching larger dogs for smaller breeds'

Melbourne, Dec 16: People have started to prefer smaller dogs over larger breeds - thanks to apartment living and better security systems.

The latest figures from the Australian National Kennel Council showed that Staffordshire bull terrier registrations skyrocketed to 4483 in the past 15 years, making the dogs Australia's most popular breed, News.com.au reported.

Medium-sized breeds like French bulldogs and pugs also rated highly, while old favourites like german shepherds, dobermans and rottweilers were gradually on the decline.

Dogs Nsw spokesman Peter Higgins said pet trends had moved towards medium-sized dogs due to apartment living and the fact that people were starting families later.
