The film picks up 18 months after the end of the Emmy-winning series in 1927. “No maid, no valet, no nanny even. It’s 1927 and we are modern folk,” Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) quips.
Everything is pretty chill and sun-kissed at the Crawley estate until they get word that King George V and his wife, Queen Mary, are coming to visit for a luncheon, a royal parade and a dinner, sending them into stressed-out prep mode (or as stressed out as aristocratic Brits can get). Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), donning an adorable sleek bob now, recruits the only person who could pull all of this together in time: beloved butler Carson (Jim Carter).
