Women with the write stuff: Emmy race for Best Comedy Actress could have more scribes than ever before
More and more women are telling their own stories on TV, and many of those stories could have happy endings at the Emmys this year. The race for Best Comedy Actress could include a surprising number of comedy writers. Last year the only two nominees who wrote for their own shows were Pamela Adlon (“Better Things“) and Issa Rae (“Insecure”), but this year there could be many more.

According to our latest odds, three of the top six likely contenders for Best Comedy Actress are also writers on their shows. Adlon wrote and directed the entirety of season three of “Better Things,” and we think she’ll be back. We’re also betting on Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who wrote all of “Fleabag” and Natasha Lyonne, who co-created “Russian Doll,” wrote multiple episodes, and directed the season finale.
