Sesame Street's Caroll Spinney, Big Bird and Oscar Puppeteer, Dead at 85
Caroll Spinney, the legendary puppeteer behind Sesame Street characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, died on Sunday at the age of 85.

Spinney originated the roles of Big Bird and Oscar in Sesame Street‘s 1969 premiere. He stayed with the program for five decades, until he retired in October of 2018. At the time of his retirement, Spinney released a statement, which in part read, “Before I came to Sesame Street, I didn’t feel like what I was doing was very important. Big Bird helped me find my purpose. Even as I step down from my roles, I feel I will always be Big Bird.
