Sad Loss For Silent Cinema
2 November 2016 | by mpickfordfanSee all my reviews

Important note: This is not a film review. I hope to be able to find and add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist and some presumed lost films are still being discovered. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

George MacFarland ( Wallace Reid ), a wealthy young man who loves adventure, bets his friends Thornton Brown ( Ernest Joy ) and Arthur Sole ( Henry Woodward ) $20,000 that he can commit a crime and elude the police for a year. After he forges a check, George heads West and does escape arrest for nearly a year, despite the proliferation of police circulars bearing his name and his favourite expression, "Believe me, Xantippe." In a Colorado hunting lodge, he meets Sheriff Kamman's ( Noah Beery ) pretty daughter Dolly ( Ann Little ), who recognizes and tries to arrest him. According to the terms of the bet, however, he must be captured by a genuine officer of the law, which Dolly is not. With the stroke of midnight, the year elapses and George wins the bet as well as the sheriff's daughter.

This 1918 silent romance/comedy/drama was based on the Broadway play, Believe Me Xantippe by John Frederick Ballard. Directed by Donald Crisp, starring Wallace Reid and Ann Little. Believe Me, Xantippe (1918) is listed in the American Silent Feature Film Database as; No holdings located in archives. The loss of this film is a tragic one for fans of Wallace Reid and silent cinema.
