Rent Free (1922) - Lost ?
3 January 2017 | by mpickfordfanSee all my reviews

Important note: This is not a film review. I hope to be able to find and add as many silent film synopsis of films that have a survival status of unknown or presumed lost. I try to do as much research as I can and it is not my intention to deceive anyone, for sometimes the film does exist and some presumed lost films are still being discovered. I am more than delighted if someone has knowledge of a film listed as lost but survives, as I wish all silent films did survive. I hope the reader enjoys this brief synopsis.

Buell Arnister, Jr. ( Wallace Reid ), prefers poverty as an artist to the lawyer's career planned for him by his father. Dispossessed of his studio, he camps on the rooftop of a nearby mansion, where he meets Barbara Teller ( Lila Lee ), who has been cheated out of her inheritance by her stepmother and is likewise forced to tent on the roof with her friend Justine Tate ( Gertrude Short ). During a storm, he invites the girls to take shelter in an unoccupied bedroom. Buell finds in the pocket of a dressing gown a note addressed to his father and signed by James Teller, stating that his last will gives Barbara her rights. During the absence of Mrs. Teller, Buell and Barbara fall in love, and Buell begins doing newspaper sketches--among them, one of the Count de Mourney ( Clarence Geldert ), Mrs. Teller's new husband, whom he invites to dinner. Mrs. Teller has Buell and the girls arrested, but Buell produces the note, which leads to the discovery of a second will by which Barbara regains her property.

This 1922 silent was produced by the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, starring Wallace Reid and Lila Lee. Tragically the survival status of Rent Free (1922) is listed in the American Silent Feature Film Database as; No holdings located in archives.
