John Mannering (Adolphe Menjou) is said to have a nickname of "The Great Lover". To audiences of the 1930s, this would provide the character with the standing of a great actor, like John Barrymore who was known as "The Great Profile". Mannering is also a major star of stage and screen, like Barrymore was.
