One of over a hundred Columbia features, mostly Westerns, sold to Hygo Television Films in the 1950s, who marketed them under the name of Gail Pictures; opening credits were redesigned, with some titles misspelled, the credit order of the players rearranged, some names misspelled, and new end titles attached, thus eliminating any evidence of their Columbia roots. Apparently, the original material was not retained in most of the cases, and the films have survived, even in the Sony library, only with these haphazardly created replacement opening and end credits. The cheap westerns of the 40s and 50s are usually associated with Roy and Gene, Alan Rocky Lane and the Durango Kid. But Bill Elliot is a pleasant surprise. This film (1941) seems more actual than with the others actors mentioned, it is more entertaining and makes you wonder what you want from a movie, perhaps that great feeling only westerns could deliver. By following the story of Wild Bill Hickock (Elliot) that arrives in Deadwood and proceeds to bring justice challenging with success all the bad guys, you sure get a pleasant feeling. Elliot plays the quiet type, barely speaking, the seed for the future Clint Eastwood . Even Dub Taylor(Cannonball) is not the standard sidekick, when he gets provoked by the bad guy Kirby (Arthur Loft), his cowardice, though funny, makes you uncomfortable. And none else better than his friend Hickock to redeem him. Great fun!!
