Storyline

A disparate group are trapped on a remote island by a hurricane. On the island, a doctor works to make humans twice as small as we already are. This, apparently, will help prevent over population. Unfortunately, his experiments have also created some giant shrews. As the shrews run out of smaller animals to eat, they move in on the people in the house. Written by Dan Whitehead <dan@idg.co.uk>

Trivia

A sequel, Return of the Killer Shrews, was produced in 2012, again starring Best as Thorne Sherman. Bruce Davison took the role of Jerry. The film also starred John Schneider and Rick Hurst, Best's co-stars in The Dukes of Hazzard. The length of time between the original film's release and the sequel's release (over 54 years) is one of the longest between film sequels in history. See more »

Goofs

It is mentioned early in the movie that the shrews' appetites are so great that if two of them were left in a cage together, the stronger one would kill and eat the weaker. It seems odd, then, that with the hundreds of shrews on the island, they would be so devoted to eating specifically the people that they would dig through the walls of the house, instead of just turning on each other. Quotes

[first lines]
Narrator: Those who hunt by night will tell you that the wildest and most vicious of all animals is the tiny shrew. The shrew feeds only by the dark of the moon. He *must* eat his own body weight every few hours - or starve. And the shrew devours *everything*: bones, flesh, marrow... everything. In March, first in Alaska, and then invading steadily southward, there were reports of a new species: the giant, *killer* shrew.

Alternate Versions

The original uncut version contains a brief prologue explaining what a shrew is. In the most common public domain print, this prologue has been completely removed except for the final line of narration ("There were reports of a new species...the giant killer shrew.") which introduces the main title. Fun, entertaining 1959 low budget B Horror movie.
29 June 2004 | by ChuckStraubSee all my reviews

The Killer Shrews is a low budget B horror movie from 1959. Are there problems with it? Does it seem simple and not as scary as modern horror films? Yes and yes, I just said it was a low budget B movie from 1959. Don't expect too much. Considering this, I've watched this movie several times over the years and find it to be a fun, suspenseful, and entertaining movie. I also believe it to be under rated and well worth viewing. Being under rated, it also is very reasonably priced. You just have to sit back, relax and enjoy it. This type of movie however could not stand up to a close examination. If it's taken too seriously or is put under a microscope, it just won't be able to stand the inspection.
