Storyline

A mad bomber, who looks like a large black-ball bomb with wild eyes, blasts his way out of prison, vowing revenge on the officer who sent him there - the Surete Commissioner. Inspector Clouseau promises to protect the Commissioner, but no matter where they go, Clouseau's screening is ineffective, the mad bomber reaches his target, and a bomb explodes, blasting only the Commissioner. Finally, the Commissioner himself becomes a mad bomber - and Clouseau is his target! Written by Kevin McCorry <mmccorry@nb.sympatico.ca>

Doesn't explode
12 May 2019 | by TheLittleSongbirdSee all my reviews

Anybody who likes the Pink Panther cartoons are very likely to get a kick of the Inspector series. Count me as somebody who does like Pink Panther cartoons, if more the 60s cartoons than the ones from particularly the mid 70s onwards which were not as funny, looked cheaper and were more routine and formulaic. Found myself liking The Inspector cartoons just as much as the 60s Pink Panther cartoons as a child, like them even more through adult eyes.

'Napoleon Blown-Aparte' unfortunately is not one of the best The Inspector cartoons (consider it a lesser effort of the earlier ones), and somewhat of a big letdown after two great previous cartoons in 'The Great De Gaulle Stone Operation' and 'Reaux, Reaux, Reaux Your Boat'. Far from unwatchable and enough of the strengths of The Inspector cartoons are here, but the humour has been much funnier and other cartoons have more interesting stories and more imaginative villains.

The best thing about 'Napoleon Blown-Aparte' agreed is the animation. Fairly simple in terms of drawing but never ugly, while the somewhat abstract backgrounds have nice attention to detail, more so than the Pink Panther cartoons (not a knock at all on the animation of that series), and don't look sparse. But it is the deep and rich colours that stand out in this regard. Liked the jauntiness and jazzy slinkiness of the music, which didn't sound too cheap or repetitive.

Did enjoy the interaction between The Inspector and the commissioner, and the character contrasts and chemistry between The Inspector and Deux Deux has some shining moments (just not as much as before, because other cartoons are funnier and play to the characters' strengths more). The voice acting is fine, hard to go wrong with Pat Harrington Jr.

However, as the other reviewers have mentioned, 'Napoleon Blown-Aparte' is a one-joke cartoon and sadly while it starts off nicely it becomes tired and repetitive too early. Would have liked sharper physical comedy and wittier verbal humour (the irony doesn't come out enough and the word play is not as inspired), which is what makes the best The Inspector cartoons work, did think that there were nowhere near enough laughs here. And yes that laugh track was completely pointless, overused and too obvious.

Of course The Inspector series is somewhat of a formulaIc one, but that is not obvious in the cartoons where the humour and character interaction really shines like the first two cartoons in the series did, the villains were imaginative and the stories not too predictable. Sadly the story is very predictable and could have done with more energy and the villain is a rather ordinary one with a motivation more cliched than most villains' in the series.

In summary, watchable but a disappointment compared to the great previous two cartoons. Should have exploded but doesn't. 5/10
