[first lines]
Mildred Harrington: John? John!
John Harrington: [shaving] Just a minute, Mildred.
John Harrington: [voice-over] My name is John Harrington. I'm 30 years old. I am a paranoiac. Hmph... "paranoiac". An enchanting word. So civilized, and full of possibilities. The truth is, I am completely mad... the realization which annoyed me at first, but is now amusing to me. Quite amusing. Nobody suspects I am a madman... a dangerous murderer. Not Mildred, my wife... nor the employees of my fashion center... nor, of course, my customers.

American (err, I mean Italian) Psycho, circa 1969
5 March 2002 | by lizard-coleSee all my reviews

"Hatchet for the Honeymoon" is the first film by Mario Bava I have seen, but I'm still undecided on it. It's both impressive and incredibly boring at the same time. What I find most fascinating about the film, however, are its parallels to the recently released "American Psycho."

Much like "American Psycho," from the beginning of the film we are introduced to a protagonist professing his insanity. "Hatchet for the Honeymoon" also slips into the zone of reality/unreality frequently. "Hatchet," however, ultimately becomes a much cleaner and more understandable narrative than "American Psycho" turned out to be.

From start to finish, Bava's incredible visual style is omni-present in every single frame of film. Bava has the incredible ability to turn something as mundane as morning coffee into a visual masterpiece. At the same time, Bava's impressive visuals easily overpower the narrative of his film.

The story itself is fairly cut & dry for the first half of the film-- the main character is shown killing various women in an attempt to gain clarity to a mystery in his past (the murder of his mother). Believing each time he kills the past becomes clearer, nothing can stop the madman on his rampage. Things get interesting, however, when the psychotic turns on his own wife-- but following her murder becomes haunted by her ghost and his weak grip on reality begins to loosen...

Slow at times, the style of the film makes up for its lack of pacing. Recommended for fans of "American Psycho" and more Hitchcockian horror films ("Psycho"). Other people really won't get this film.
