There are numerous instances of boom mic visibility are only found in Full Screen or Pan & Scan versions such as VHS and Rhino's DVD release. (The most recent Paramount DVD presents the film in its proper matted Widescreen format, eliminating the boom mic visibility errors.)
In the final scenes where Sheriff Pusser drives a police car to the Lucky Spot, just before he arrives, in the long shot of him driving down the highway, the patrol car has red lights on it's roof. When he arrives and drives the car through the bar, the car has blue lights.
Buford shoots Callie on Christmas Eve. When he drives up in front of his house on Christmas morning, the scene was clearly shot in the Spring. While Southwest Tennessee, like most of the Southeastern states, does occasionally have spring like temperatures in mid Winter, the hardwood trees do still shed their leaves and the grass does go dormant and turn brown. Also, in the Winter in the South, there is a wide variation in temperature from morning to later afternoon and neither Buford nor Pauline found it necessary to even put on a sweater or light jacket to stand outside in the wind on Christmas morning.
At the end of the scene in which Pauline dies, Obra walks over to a squad car and, out of anger he proceeds to punch out the driver side window of the squad car. However, the actual window was clearly covered with some sort of easily breakable "stunt glass", as the real window of the car remains intact.
Before Callie is killed by Pusser, she tries to kill him with a shotgun hidden under a pile of clothing. She fires twice, Pusser ducks, then he kills her. In the process, Callie's blasts blow huge holes in the wall several feet wide behind Pusser, yet miraculously, no one on Callie's right sitting at the bar was hit by these stray blasts.
When Buford goes into the Lucky Spot with his stick and begins to hit the men, it is obvious that he is not using a stick to hit them with because it is flexible. It appears to be made of foam. In non-contact shots in the scene it is a real stick.
When Sheriff Thurman and his deputy are chasing Pusser in his truck only the sheriff and the deputy are seen in the car from the front camera shots. But as they get close the bridge, in the rear camera shots, three people are seen in the car or at least two people and some large object in the back seat.
