Storyline

In the third century of the second calendar, a corrupt galactic federation, with Earth at its centre, Narcotises its billions of citizens into placid submission. A rebel named Roj Blake, who once tried to organise a resistance group to overthrow the regime, was caught and his memories wiped. But Blake's revolutionary spirit is revived when he witnesses a mass slaughter by police which is covered up by officials. He escapes on-board a prison ship, and together with a lovable band of outlaws, takes over a vacant alien space cruiser of awesome drive capability. Christening their ship, "The Liberator", Blake and his group travel the Milky Way to seek any opportunity to undermine the corrupt regime. Written by Kevin McCorry <mmccorry@nb.sympatico.ca>

Quotes

[about Blake]
Dr. Havant: Can't he be eliminated?
Alta Morag: No, he's a symbol of opposition to the Administration.
Dr. Havant: So?
Ven Glynd: We've done cross-sectional psych readings, which show that a high percentage of people, particularly the younger ones, believe that Blake's trial was a showpiece, that his statements were rigged.
Alta Morag: His death could be used by the dissidents. They need a hero. Alive or dead, Blake could be it.
Dr. Havant: Difficult. I suppose my department could infect him, some rapidly terminal disease. Would his natural death help...

Wonderfully cheesy!
26 February 2004 | by stephie-12See all my reviews

This is quite simply the coolest sci-fi series of all time. It is easy to laugh at the sets and effects in these days of CGI, but it was good entertaining fun when it came out. Gareth Thomas played the Blake of the title, who whizzed round the universe with his crew of outlaws, trying to avoid the Federation. The leader of the Federation, Servalan, was a strong, scary woman who thought nothing of stabbing her allies in the back. In contrast to series such as Doctor Who, the female cast members werent just "screamers" - they all had their own specific and useful skills, such as Cally (Jan Chappell) who had psychic powers and Jenna (Sally Knyvette), an expert pilot. Watching it now brings back many memories, but it does stand up even now. Inspired!
