Trivia

This film gained some international publicity when a Swedish ship, the M.S. Lindblad Explorer, transporting a production unit to Antartica for location shooting, struck a submerged reef and almost sank. Passengers were rescued by Chilean Navy ships. See more »

Goofs

Upon entering the bunker, Yoshizumi watches in horror on several monitors as nuclear rockets launch all over the world. The footage on many of these monitors feature hand-held camera work. Due to the virus sweeping the world many months earlier, there would be no one alive at that point to be operating these cameras. See more »

Crazy Credits

The Japanese version mixes English and Japanese writing during the opening credit sequence. The English-speaking actors' names are in English and the Japanese cast and crew members' names are in Japanese. See more »

Alternate Versions

The original Japanese version ran a length of 155 minutes. The US version runs a length of about 108 minutes. The film has been even cut down as far as 101 minutes. Most of the footage in Japan (in Japanese with English subtitles) was eliminated from the American cut, leaving the American "disaster stalwarts" like George Kennedy, Chuck Connors and Robert Vaughn to take up most of this cut. Spoiler Alert: The 102-minute even totally deletes the film's notorious post-apocalyptic "trek south" sequences, rather ending when the world is destroyed by the nuclear weapons. See more »

Great Movie, if you can find a real copy
7 February 2004 | by Billy-116See all my reviews

Like others have said, most copies are incomplete, and a bit lost.

The one I got from Amazon a couple years ago is missing many scenes. Most importantly the last one (referred to in the opening, so that it no longer makes any sense).

To make it worse, the sound is like an 8 track in a noisy 68 Pontiac!

The original is one of my favorite movies. Well done, good story, wish I could find it!
