What We Learned From the 2018 Upfronts

  • Variety
TV’s 2018 upfront presentations brought with them new shows and plenty of surprises – just what anyone might expect from this annual paean to the nation’s biggest TV networks.

Behind the glitz and celebrity, however, were a bevy of not-so-subtle reminders of how much money is at stake. Comcast, Walt Disney, 21st Century Fox, CBS and Time Warner are about to vie for billions in advertising commitments, and the slightest misstep could weigh on their chances to prevail.

We went to the upfronts so you didn’t have to. Below, a few of our findings:

*Diversity is driving programming decisions….

From CBS’s new “Magnum Pi” reboot to a host of presentations that spelled out exact percentages and numbers of female showrunners and producers, Big TV was eager to show how it could fill its schedules with stuff that many audiences might want to see. At a time when many

ABC cancels Marvel’s Inhumans, Designated Survivor, Quantico and more, passes on The Greatest American Hero

ABC has announced its cancellations for the new TV season, and it will come as very little surprise to hear that Marvel’s Inhumans won’t be returning for a second season after its rather disastrous reception last year.

In addition to Inhumans, the network has also cancelled fellow freshman dramas Deception, Kevin Probably Saves the World and The Crossing.

Meanwhile, the axe has also fallen on the Kiefer Sutherland-headlined Designated Survivor and Priyanka Chopra terrorism drama Quantico, with the shows failing to secure a third and fourth season respectively.

Designated Survivor’s cancellation comes as somewhat of a shock; although ratings were not particularly strong, it has been profitable for ABC thanks to international deals and a partnership with Netflix, and had been expected to secure a third season.

A decision on the future of Inhumans‘ fellow Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has not yet been revealed,

Jimmy Fallon, Will Smith Perform the ‘History of TV Theme Songs’ – Yes, Including ‘Fresh Prince’ (Video)
Will Smith can still spit the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. And with Jimmy Fallon’s help, on Thursday, he also did “Three’s Company,” “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Martin” as part of their “History of TV Theme Songs.” The two performed pieces of 11 classic small-screen tunes last night on NBC’s “Tonight Show.” The whole thing culminated with a trip into the excitable studio audience for the opening number to Smith’s first sitcom. Here is the full list of TV theme songs they did: “The Golden Girls” “The Jeffersons” “Diff’rent Strokes” “Good Times” “The Andy Griffith Show” “I Dream of Jeannie” “Full House” “The Greatest American Hero” “Martin” “Three’s Company” “The Fresh Prince...

Will Smith and Fallon Team for History of TV Theme Songs Medley — Watch
This is a story all about how… Will Smith and Jimmy Fallon turned some classic TV theme songs upside down.

Smith joined the Tonight Show host on Thursday, and reminisced about the “lost art” of the opening title sequence and the accompanying earworms that are still remembered fondly to this day.

“Nobody does that anymore… when we were growing up, every show had a hot theme song, and I was a part of it,” Smith said, referring to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And that’s when Fallon surprised the audience by pulling out two microphones, and asking Smith to

Fox Will Develop a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot When "Joss Whedon Decides it's Time"

I've liked that the Buffy The Vampire Slayer story has continued in comic book form over the years, but some fans have wanted to see the series return in live-action form. If something like this did happen, it seems like now would be the time.

Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman recently talked about the possibility of bringing Buffy back saying Buffy The Vampire Slayer "is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back." He goes on to say that bringing the series back is a conversation that they are having a lot at the network, saying:

“It’s something we talk about frequently. Joss Whedon is one of the greatest creators we’ve ever worked for. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it.”

Is Joss Whedon actually involved with these talks that are happening!? I have no idea, but a couple weeks ago it

Hannah Simone is new Greatest American Hero, but will reboot be as entertaining as the original?

A few weeks ago it was announced that ABC was to remake the hit 1981 series The Greatest American Hero with a new female lead. Earlier this week it was announced that Hannah Simone is the chosen one to don the tight red lycra costume and strut her stuff to the cheesy theme song. For those who are not in the know, The Greatest American Hero was a superhero comedy devised by the late Stephen J. Cannell who would go on to create such shows as The A-Team and 21 Jump Street to name a few. The original series starred...read more
