Charlie's ex-wife disappears, and he travels to where she grew up--a rural town in the Midwest--to look for her. But, surprisingly, nobody knows about her or any of her many relatives, the Newmans. He meets aliens; but when he contacts the FBI, they don't believe him. He tells his story to a tabloid; and suddenly, he is chased by the aliens.
sasaS, Illinois, 1958; a spacecraft lands by the city in an alien invasion, and the town's population disappears. NYC, 1983; Margaret Newman leaves her daughter, Elizabeth off with her ex-husband, professor Charles Bigelow, an entomologist (bugs, insects) who teaches at Columbia University, to attend the funeral of her mother, back in her hometown of Centreville. When Margaret doesn't return, Charles (along with his dog, Louie) drive to Centerville to look for her, but when he arrives, he finds the town's people acting very odd; they seem 'normal' - for people in the 1950's. After fending off an attack, the pair return to New York, where Charlie finds the story had been reported; in a supermarket tabloid. After he meets the pepper's editor, Betty Walker, (and after she's been attacked by an alien disguised as an Avon lady) the pair team up, with Charles expecting to rescue Elizabeth from the extraterrestrial beings.
