The movie's world premiere was held at the Centennial Twin Theater in Sheridan, WY. The evening included an afterparty and a 45-minute private concert by Prince at the local Holiday Inn. Local resident Lisa Barber won the right to host the premiere when she was the 10,000th caller in MTV's "Prince Under the Cherry Moon" contest. Several cast members attended, including Prince, Joni Mitchell, and Ray Parker Jr..

Kristin Scott Thomas has since been disdainful of the film. In a 2005 interview, she said "When I left drama school...I was more afraid of not working at all than of the actual material I was being offered. And if you look at my very first film, you'll understand exactly what I mean."

Prince took over from original director Mary Lambert over "creative differences." The production was filming in Europe, so it wasn't covered by Director's Guild of America rules against firing a director in favor of a lead actor.

Prince wrote the Bangles' "Manic Monday" using the pseudonym Christopher Tracy, the character he plays in this film. The song became a hit for the band the same year this film was released.

Several lines from a poem Christopher wrote became the song "An Honest Man," featured in Prince's 1998 release "Crystal Ball". According to the liner notes, the song was "inspired by Kristin Scott Thomas' character."

The film premiered in the not so glamorous location of Sheridan, Wyoming as a result of an MTV contest in which the winner, a 22 year old hotel chambermaid, won the privilege of having the film premier in her hometown. She also was escorted by the leading man himself who sat with her in the theater and later had her as his special backstage guest at a concert after the premeire.

In an alternate opening sequence, Christopher emerges from a lover's house and says to her "We had fun, didn't we?" before kissing her goodbye and departing. They would have been his first lines in the film. It ends up the last thing he says to Mary before dying in her arms.
