Edward's mistress Thelma Furness (Lucy Gutteridge) had an identical twin sister Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. Gutteridge had previously played Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt in the mini-series Little Gloria... Happy at Last (1982).

David Waller previously played Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947) in Edward & Mrs. Simpson (1978), which also dealt with the Edward VIII abdication crisis.

The poem Wallis quotes at the beginning "My friend, with you to live alone..." is from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Ode To Memory (1842) and was indeed printed and framed by Edward.

Towards the end Edward recites the poem "If I were king..." from Justin Huntly McCarthy's 1901 novel and play of that name filmed in 1938. Although these recount the life of medieval French poet Francois Villon, the poem is McCarthy's creation.
