Storyline

Detective Inspector Henry Crabbe, an intelligent, sensible, and mild-mannered man, would like nothing better than to retire from the police force and devote his time and energy to the restaurant that he wants to open. However, Assistant Chief Constable Fisher won't allow this to happen because this would expose his own stupidity and ineptitude to the unwelcome attention of his superiors. So, after a botched operation to try to catch a notorious criminal, Fisher devises a scheme that incriminates Henry, and, until he can solve this invidious dilemma, he must continue to serve at his boss's calling, whenever the need arises. Trivia

The exteriors of the building that were used as the restaurant are located at 64 High Street in the Old Town in Hemel Hempstead. It was originally a florist. The building became a minor tourist attraction during the series. It now houses the business of a doll house maker since the series ended in 1997. A nearby restaurant at 80 High Street renamed itself "Pie in the Sky" to capitalize on the program's popularity. It later changed its name to Les Amants. As of this writing, the original building that was portrayed as Pie in The Sky is still a doll manufacture and in business. See more »

Comfort-Food Detective Drama
16 August 2012 | by acutlerSee all my reviews

You had me at "Richard Griffiths"... add Maggie Steed and the staple Detective Show format with a food twist, and there is barely an unwatchable episode.

That doesn't mean there aren't a multitude of flaws: the character of Cambridge is both appalling uninspired in creation and woodenly acted; the "Hooperman"-arc opportunity is wasted; staff changes at the restaurant are clumsily handled - not one well-handled exit; and the reason Henry is doing two jobs is inconsistent and illogical.

But we can all turn a blind-eye to these shortcomings, as they are not really important to most episodes which stand on their own merit.

But mostly I watch it because I salivate at Henry's Steak & Kidney Pie... we all have our weaknesses!
