Nickelodeon Sets ‘SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!’ TV Special for December

Nickelodeon is taking you to a pineapple under the sea — and Broadway — this December with a live TV special version of “The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!” set to air this holiday season, the kids’ cable channel said Thursday.

Director Tina Landau and members of the Broadway show’s original award-winning company will reunite to film the musical in front of a live theater audience with a production that “will capture all-new depths of theatrical innovation where the power of optimism really can save the world.”

Here’s the description for the musical: “Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.”

Welcome to Nickelodeon’s hidden-camera prank show “The Substitute.”

In the wrestler-turned-actor’s episode, which serves as the series premiere, the former Doctor of Thuganomics plays tricks on and treats kids at the Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills in Monrovia, Calif. He’s totally undercover the whole time.

Actor-wrestler John Cena will be seen in a new avatar for the prank series, "The Substitute".

A lot of pictures are doing the rounds on the Internet in which John is seen sporting a big beard, wig, beer belly and prosthetics.

According to "eonline.com", John used a full costume and prosthetics to transform into three different camp counselors all in the name of pranking campers. He was a quirky environmentalist, a fearful fire safety expert and a CPR instructor with an unusual best friend.

The show will premiere on October 4.

On the film front, John will feature in "Playing With Fire" and "Fast and Furious 9".

John Cena is branching out on Nickelodeon. The network just announced the Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? star will guest on the new TV show, The Substitute.

The prank series, which began as a special, "features stars who are transformed by a team of Hollywood special effects artists to go undercover as professionals in various fields, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locations. During the reveal at the end of the day, each organization receives a $25,000 donation."

Unscripted Producer Todd Hurvitz Inks Overall Deal With Industrial Media (Exclusive)

Unscripted veteran Todd Hurvitz has signed an overall deal with Industrial Media, Variety has learned exclusively.

“Securing the best development and show running talent is critical as we expand to meet the demands of this vibrant marketplace,” said Eli Holzman, CEO of Industrial Media. “Todd has consistently been one of the most creative and well-rounded producers we know. He has a real gift for storytelling and comedy and we are overjoyed to have him on our team.”

Under the deal, Hurvitz develop original series and produce content in various formats. Hurvitz is currently the showrunner on the unscripted Nickelodeon series “The Substitute,” which is produced by Industrial Media’s Intellectual Property Corporation.

“It’s rare to find a multi-faceted producer with such a wide range of skills and formats under his belt,” said Industrial Media president. Aaron Saidman. “He’ll be a welcomed addition.”

Nickelodeon has some new shows in store. The network just announced they've ordered two new TV series, Top Elf and The Substitute.

Both unscripted series, The Substitute "features stars who are transformed by a team of Hollywood special effects artists to go undercover as professionals in various fields, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locations" and Top Elf tests the skills of prospective Santa's elves in a series of holiday-themed challenges.

TV News Roundup: ‘South Side’ Renewed for Season 2 at Comedy Central

In today’s roundup, Comedy Central renews “South Side” for a second season and Disney Channel sets an Oct. 4 release date for its interactive live special “Just Roll With It: You Decide Live.”

The four-part HBO/Sky limited series “Catherine the Great,” starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, will debut Oct. 21 on HBO. Mirren plays the titular Russian empress and Clarke play her lover, Grigory Potemkin.

Disney Channel will premiere the Halloween-themed special “Just Roll With It: You Decide Live!” on Friday, Oct. 4. The special will mix scripted and improv comedy with an interactive twist. Viewers can vote on plot points real time via the DisneyNOW app or DisneyNOW.com and the actors have to react accordingly.

Nickelodeon Orders ‘Top Elf’ Competition Series, Full Season Of ‘The Substitute’

Nickelodeon is expanding its unscripted slate with two new series. The network has greenlit new holiday-themed competition series Top Elf, created by Mike Duffy and Tim Duffy, and ordered a full series pickup of The Substitute, from The Intellectual Property Corporation.

Top Elf, which begins production in September on five one-hour episodes, features kid contestants with extraordinary building and design skills competing for the coveted title of Top Elf.

Following the strong performance of two specials which aired earlier this year, hidden camera prank show The Substitute has been picked up for a full 10-episode series order. Production is underway, with the series premiere set for October.

Lilly Singh To Guest On Hit Nickelodeon Prank Series ‘The Substitute’

YouTube megastar Lilly Singh is still in the process of conceiving her NBC late-night talk show, A Little Late With Lilly Singh. But in the meantime, Singh will be guest-starring on a hit Nickelodeon series called The Substitute.

The Substitute is a hidden-camera prank show from the producers of Undercover Boss, where celebrities are transformed by a team of special effects artists to go under cover as substitute teachers and surprise unsuspecting students. In Singh’s episode (which you can preview below), she goes to Woodrow Wilson Middle School in California in full prosthetics to prank Math, English, and Natural History students. When Singh’s true identity is revealed at the end of the episode, a $25,000 donation is also tendered to the school.

The Substitute premiered on April Fool’s Day last month and ranked as the top show in its time period for kids aged 6 to 11, Nickelodeon says.

Nickelodeon’s ‘The Substitute’ Prank Series Opens Strong As ‘Henry Danger’ Gets 10 More Episodes

Nickelodeon’s new prank series The Substitute got off to a strong start in its April 1 series debut.

The premiere episode drew four million total viewers across all four of its airings Monday, and scored big with kids 2-11 and 6-11. The Substitute, the first series to air from the network’s recently announced content slate, ranked as the top show with Kids 6-11 in its time period across all TV, and it scored year-over-year double and triple-digit increases with Kids 2-11 and Kids 6-11, respectively. It averaged a 1.9/454K with Kids 2-11–up 36% over last year; a 1.4/212K with Kids 6-11–up 100%; and 866K total viewers, up 14%. Additional airings also ranked as the top telecasts with Kids 6-11 in their respective time periods, according to the network and Nielsen.

In addition, Nickelodeon has ordered an additional 10 episodes for its hit live-action show Henry Danger.

Taiwan Lgbt Platform GagaOOLala Adds Gol Studios Production Hub

Hong Kong director Kit Hung’s new film “Forever 17” is among the first projects to be supported by Gol Studios, a new Lgbt production platform launched by Jay Lin’s Taiwan-based Portico Media.

Aiming to take Lgbt cinema into the mainstream, Gol Studio is a crowdsourcing website that helps film projects on three fronts: helping productions find talent, crew and funding; distribution; and crowdsourced marketing.

The initiative is a sister operation of GagaOOLala, Asia’s first Lgbt-focused Ott platform. In the three years since launch, it has become a well-known player in the industry, with 150,000 members and 1,000 titles from all over the world. The platform now operates in Taiwan and covers all of Southeast Asia including Hong Kong and Macau.

Gol Studios is also partnering with Zero Chou for the third installment of her “Six Asian Cities Rainbow Project,” a series of films about different Lgbtq issues, each set in a different location.
