Chimera is a deadly virus that will bear a grisly death unless you are given the antidote. The creator of Chimera is murdered and the antidote is stolen by a disavowed I.M.F. Agent, Sean Ambrose (Dougray Scott). The Impossible Mission Force, (I.M.F.), hire the skilled and charming Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), and the beautiful Nyah Hall (Thandie Newton), who has had her share with Ambrose. Their mission, should they choose to accept it, is to send Hall undercover to Ambrose and learn what she can for Hunt to bring down Chimera, but they will have to break into a secure lab by jumping off of buildings and dodging bullets. Its impossible.
John Woo likes to create theme music with his composer in advance of production as it works as inspiration while working. Their time in Spain led he and Hans Zimmer to incorporate the guitar into more of the music. See more »
At the beginning Hunt it hanging by one hand. His Center of Gravity (belly button) is not directly under his single hand that he is hanging from. His CG is out away from the mountain where the real safety cable is holding him up. See more »
Mission Commander Swanbeck:
[during a breifing in Sevile, Spain]
You were under specific instructions to bring back a living sample of the Chimera virus. I'd be very interested to know how, after you'd managed its recovery intact, it subsequently got destroyed.
By fire. That's the best way, really.

The UK cinema version is the most complete version of the film to date, featuring additional scenes of violence. Additional footage includes:
a loud crunch during the aeroplane hijack as Ambrose twists and breaks Dr. Nekhorvich's neck
the actual impact and blood spurt on Stamp's knee when Ambrose shoots it, thinking Stamp is Ethan
the kick to Hunt's face during the beach fight is seen in full and does not cut away to Ambrose' face at the point of impact It is assumed that this version is the cut of the film made before trims were made to it for the MPAA to secure a PG-13 rating.
If you sometimes go to the movies to be entertained by unbelievably daring stunts, this is the movie to see. From Cruise's incredible rock climb to nail-biting motorcycle "joist" this movie impresses with the stunts. The plot could be written on the back of a postage stamp. However, that's rarely what audiences go to see films like this for. The performances are above average, particularly Dougray Scott and Thadie Newton. A pity Newton's character is underused during the second half of the film. Besides being beautiful, this woman can ACT! It is also refreshing to see a demonstrably romantic and affectionate interracial relationship portrayed on screen in such a positive manner. Newton's race never comes up in the film. Credit producer Tom Cruise for this one. This is one of those movies I'd rent to give my home theatre system a workout. This movie succeeds on its own level; however, I can understand how others could be disappointed. I gave this one a "7" on the IMDB scale.
By the way, it was a clever touch to have Cruise receive his mission briefing via wrap-around sunglasses. Kind of nice to be reminded of RISKY BUSINESS.
