Storyline

Jessica Fletcher is on a train headed for El Paso. She shares a table in the dining car with a woman who subsequently vanishes, leaving her purse on the table. Then a message is announced for the woman and Jessica accepts it. This leads to an attack in her compartment and a demand for 'it'. She has no idea what 'it' is and is rescued by a man claiming to be a journalist. The plot thickens. She is warned away by an FBI man, but continues to follow her clues to Agua Verde where the woman apparently lives. The plot twists and turns as she delves deeper into a most devious mystery. Trivia

Murder, She Wrote: South by Southwest (1997) was one of the most complicated scripts to prep because of the number of locations required. Matching terrain for road work, sheriff car chases, helicopter landing and takeoff points, interior café diner (Saugus), lecture interior, train station (Acton), tracks for the AMTRAK train to travel for filming while the train was in motion! The production company (Universal Studios) and AMTRAK had to gain permission from Metro Rail to use right of way on their rail tracks, with the film train waiting on side bar tracks for the daily Metro schedules. Filming the bus interior while moving on back roads of Acton, the town of Piru for the bus passengers to disembark, completely dressing the Piru Main Street for the scripted scenes. An epic for a two hour Movie of the Week, this was a very busy shoot; every member of the crew drove to each location on their own. Not one person was put up in a hotel during the entire filming schedule. See more »

A true delight
27 June 2010 | by TheLittleSongbirdSee all my reviews

I do agree that this is a must see for fans of the show like I am. I don't think any of the TV movies achieve the level of greatness the show does but they come close. This could be the best of them, and the one that is most like the show in terms of tone. The plot is filled with intriguing twists and turns though nothing too complicated, and the script has some great moments as well. The direction is solid, the pacing is good in general if a tad draggy in the middle half and the scenery and photography are striking. I liked the beautiful and haunting music too, and the acting is fine, especially from Angela Lansbury(obviously), while Mel Harris and Keith David also give good turns. Overall, a true delight for fans of the series. 9/10 Bethany Cox
