Storyline

A cat is bullying the poor mouse population. The have a mass meeting to decide what to do, and resolve that by putting a bell on him they'l hear it and have time to get away when he approaches. One mouse is selected to do this, but he has no luck until he's doused with vanishing cream, and then, somehow, he can appear and disappear at will. With this inexplicable power, he somehow, off screen, is able to cover the cat with bells, including yards of sleigh bells. Written by Western One

Belling the Cat
24 February 2015 | by bobliptonSee all my reviews

When a community of thousands of mice grows tired of being tormented by a cat, one of their number suggests being him. One mouse, anxious to impress a lady mouse, volunteers in this bread-and-butter Terrytoon.

Although Paul Terry's staff was trying to find a successful starring cartoon character -- at this time, Gandy Goose was in the lead, although a revised Puddy Pup had already been introduced -- much of their production schedule continued to be occupied with standard children's stories. This one looks like one of their rote efforts: competently done, but the central gags were done several times by almost every cartoon studio. Musical director Philip Scheib does offer some fun by deconstructing "The Blind Mice" but that's a fairly intellectual pleasure for a cartoon aimed at small children.
