Roper, a Borstal boy, is found stabbed near his home. When Clay and Dexter arrive in the West Country to investigate they find several suspects with strong motives for the killing including the boy's parents.

Two seamen steal some bars of gold from a makeshift strongroom as a cargo ship nears the Thames estuary. When the ship docks, Clay and Dexter investigates the crime and find a steward has also vanished.
