‘Sherman’s Showcase’ Trailer and Clip: Time Traveling in IFC’s New Sketch Show
Created by and starring comedy duo Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, IFC’s new variety sketch show “Sherman’s Showcase” travels through time via music and clips drawn from the 40-year library of a fictional legendary musical variety show. Executive produced by John Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. and RadicalMedia, the series is inspired by shows like “Solid Gold,” “Soul Train,” and “Laugh-In,” and features a who’s who of movies, music, sports and entertainment — including two Egot winners — and multiple award-winning artists, actors and entertainers.

Each week on the eight-episode series, the show’s host, Sherman McDaniels (played by Salahuddin), opens up the vault for viewers to experience the comedy and musical numbers from the made-up 40-year history of the show. Whether it’s a real artist playing a fake character, or a comedian playing a real artist, the series promises to be always unconventional, irreverent, and most of all,

‘The Black Godfather’: Why a Living Legend Finally Came Out of the Shadows for a New Netflix Doc

‘The Black Godfather’: Why a Living Legend Finally Came Out of the Shadows for a New Netflix Doc
For decades, the world’s highest-profile entertainers, athletes and politicians have turned to a single man for advice during the most pivotal moments in their lives and careers. Clarence Avant has advised Grammy Award winners, Hall of Famers, a Heavyweight Champion of the World and two U.S. Presidents — and yet the music industry veteran remains virtually unknown. Reginald Hudlin’s new Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather” looks to change that.

“Here’s a guy who is involved in everything you know and don’t know, that you love or care about, from the music you listen to, to politicians you’re voting for, and athletes you cheer, but you really don’t know who he is,” Hudlin said.

Hudlin has known the “Godfather” for most of his professional life, and, after previous attempts to get him to tell his story, finally convinced the 88-year-old music executive to come out of the shadows.

Film Review: ‘The Black Godfather’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘The Black Godfather’
On first glance, Clarence Avant’s career highlights seem impressive, if somewhat modest for a man widely known as “the godfather of black music.” Starting as a manager to pianist-composer Lalo Schifrin, he went on to found two important if short-lived independent record labels, serve as a sporadic concert organizer and special events producer, fund-raise for Democratic politicians, and count himself as a mentor to a host of African American execs. But the 88-year-old’s impact on half a century of black music – and black enterprise in general – runs far, far deeper than that, and Reginald Hudlin’s affectionate Netflix bio-doc “The Black Godfather” does yeoman’s work introducing a figure that few outsiders have likely heard of, but who needs no introduction in the power corridors of the entertainment industry.

Perhaps the most obvious sign of Avant’s importance can be found in a brief look through the figures

Flashback: Earl Thomas Conley and Anita Pointer Triumph With ‘Too Many Times’

‘Brockmire’ Ep Says No Comedy Is Off Limits When Directed At “Stupid Incompetent People In Power” – AMC Networks Summit
It was bound to be a freewheeling discussion about comedy on television in the #MeToo era at the AMC Networks Summit when moderator Jill Kargman, creator and star of the Bravo series Odd Mom Out, began asking stars, writers and showrunners about the challenges of being funny in the “political hellscape sh*t-show” we’re currently living in.

The panel, part of AMC Networks’ second annual summit event in New York, focused on the shifting limits of comedy in a redefined age of what is or isn’t appropriate, the new freedoms afforded by greater content options in the streaming era, and a defiance among diverse creators to make their own brave choices.

Tackling the “political hellscape” question, Joel Church-Cooper, executive producer of IFC’s series Brockmire, stressed the safe comedic value of “punching up. There are plenty of stupid, incompetent people in power,” he said. “Punching upwards is very safe territory.
