Slightly Boring Episode
9 May 2016 | by Michael_ElliottSee all my reviews

Orson Welles at Large: Portrait of Gina (1958)

One of the numerous abandoned projects done by Orson Welles, this unsold television pilot has the great filmmaker in Italy where he is doing a documentary on Gina Lollobrigida and gets an interview with her as well as Vittorio De Sica and his then wife Paola Mori.

This here was originally meant to be a television show for ABC but they ended up not buying the pilot and Welles' luck wasn't any better when Lollobrigida was unhappy with how he made her look so she refused to let the film be shown in America. There are countless documents out there on the various troubles in Welles' career so you can check out one of them for more details in regards to this show's issues.

As for the episode itself, it's actually somewhat boring. Welles brings his usual flair to the project but there's just too much talking and not enough of it is interesting. The bio of Lollobrigida is pretty good so I'm not sure why she objected to how she was shown. The episode is technically well-made but it's just not interesting enough to where you'd want to watch more episodes.

Episode: B-
