Storyline

Able Seaman Dick Deadeye is charged by Queen Victoria to find the stolen Ultimate Secret. His ugliness means that his life has always been lonely but a buxom barmaid takes a shine to him. Together, they battle pirates and an evil magician before discovering that the Ultimate Secret is nothing but LOVE! Using songs based on the original works of Gilbert and Sullivan (but updated with modern lyrics), this film was created to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the first collaboration of the composers of the Savoy Operas. I have to assume all the enthusiastic reviews are from people who saw this as children

Dick Deadeye is an incomprehensible jumble of disconnected story ideas and popified Gilbert & Sullivan songs with poorly rewritten lyrics. And according to IMDB users, it's absolutely terrific.

The only explanation I have is that the reviewers saw this as a child and developed an eternal fondness for it. Children are less concerned by things like coherent storytelling and wit and more likely to be drawn in by speed and noice, which Dick Deadeye has in abundance.

The visual design by Searle is pretty nice, but there's little else to recommend this.
