Sex & Nudity

  • To be fair, many crimes are things teens may actually come into contact with at some point and may be a good conversation starter for parents of potentially at-risk teens.
  • Many types of sexual crimes are perpetrated against women, kids, and other victims, including rape, incest, mutilation, and more.

Violence & Gore

  • The show specifically focuses on violent (and often sensational) crimes that also involve sex in some way. There's some gunplay as well. Scenes can be graphic.

  • In one episode, the term "screw" is used sexually.
  • A few "damns", "asses", "bastards", "hells", "whore", "slut", "bitch", "dick" etc.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Drugs often figure prominently in the plotlines.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Many "ticking clock" scenes where the detectives have to race to save someone's life.
  • This show may be emotionally intense and disturbing for some viewers in the sense that in the end, there is not always a "win" or a "justice" shown. ( for example, despite best attempts, a rapist will get free and the victim will be left crying in the courtroom). There are also multiple episodes showing underage children committing crimes / sex crimes / lethal crimes to adults or other children older or younger, that might be disturbing to some.

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • References to pornography are fairly common. In one episode, detectives use porn websites to track rape victims and their attacker. In another, a student who was raped by his coach admitted to watching porn.
  • Olivia Benson was a rape victim and was shown being raped and assaulted.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A suicide attempt is shown where blood is gushing from a man's vein or artery for 2 to 3 seconds. Quite graphic and very disturbing.
