Storyline

David Mamet takes this story of thieves along many twists and turns, some of which work and some of which don't. Gene Hackman plays the brilliant leader of a gang (Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay & Rebecca Pigeon as Hackman's youngish wife), which pulls off complex heists for a despicable fence (Danny DeVito). After stiffing the gang on a jewelry robbery, DeVito forces the gang to go after a Swiss gold shipment and to use his nephew (Sam Rockwell) in the crime. No one trusts anyone and every step is shaded with the unexpected. Written by John Sacksteder <jsackste@bellsouth.net>

Bergman: How do you pick up your share? Where's the gold? Where's the meet?
Pinky: What're you gonna do, hurt me?
Bergman: Well, no, actually, no. I'm not gonna hurt you. But tell a guy, I'm full of admiration. What was the deal? What was the deal?
Pinky: The way you're looking at the deal, the deal was we get away with the gold. Cute, huh?
Bergman: No, that's charming. And then what?
Pinky: We slip away.
Bergman: You slip away? And me and my guys, we go to the meet and we find a truck full of pig iron. Is that the thing?
Pinky: Well, Joe figured you ...

Wow! What a smart guy!
30 May 2003 | by velameSee all my reviews

It is a movie that must be watched with a lot of attention. There are so many aspects involved in each operation, that is almost impossible to keep in control of everything. For sure, the plot is well-done, the creativity is fantastic. The situation changes from one side to other, you never know exactly what is happening, if the thieves were caught or if they have a B plan (I believe they had C, D and E ones). If you want to have an idea about what I talk about, take a look at the "recommendations" they give a good idea of what "Heist" is about. Several surprises, at the end you could believe in anything...
