It is 1969. The twenty-seven year old Father Louis lives in a convent and his priesthood is a calling for him. When, however, his friend and fellow priest Daniel gets a relationship with a woman, Louis also questions his celibate existence. Why can not he maintain an intimate relationship with another person? Through a series of events, Louis revolts against the Catholic Church and in 1973 he leaves the monastery. Coincidence brings him into contact with Daikha, a woman who gets to know him in love. In 1999 the short relationship with Daikha was virtually forgotten. Louis has turned his back on the church and lives with his childhood love Liliane. Then he receives a message that will dramatically change his life for the third time.

only one side of the dilemma

"Saint Amour" is a movie about a young Roman Catholic priest (Louis) who falls in love with a young woman he grew up with. This love makes him insecure about whether he wants to remain an unmarried priest. Wouldn't he rather marry the love of his life instead? Would God call it a capital sin if he abandons priesthood and marries the girl he is so much in love with? The church is outright unsupportive and seems to fail to recognize his struggle.

The movie does its best to show us that Louis is having great difficulty with making this choice. However, it fails to show us why this is so difficult. It seems that he is only inclined to stick to his priesthood because the church gives him a feeling of belonging. The church does not appear to be a means of serving a God that he loves.

The movie looks upon his life in retrospect, but the past is shown very much as if it is the present. This gives a good impression of the person he is, and the life that has made him this person.
