Tom Petty died October 2, 2017. His death was big news even though he was far from the biggest name in contemporary music, and even though it coincided with the shocking events in Las Vegas which saw a madman slaughter over fifty people in a pre-planned massacre.
Because it was recorded in 1999, this forty minute documentary will be far from the definitive, but for the nescient, it is as good an introduction to the man and his music as you could wish to find. It speaks to band members, his father, and of course the man himself. We learn how he was inspired by Elvis, how he broke his hand in a fit of pique, how an arsonist who has never been caught burnt his house to the ground, and much more.
Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash wrote "No Easy Road" in 1973, three years before Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers was formed, but that sentiment is as good an epitaph for the easy going Florida-born singer-songwriter as any.
