Storyline

In 1917, in the Western front, a group of survivors of the British Company Y reach the most forward German trench in a foggy night. They capture a German soldier that advises that evil is in the trench, forcing the soldiers to kill each other, and asks them to leave the place. Only the private Charlie Shakespeare listens and helps the prisoner, while a supernatural force scares and makes the soldiers insane. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Root canal surgery, anyone?
26 December 2002 | by DeanLidsterSee all my reviews

I wasn't at all sure what to expect when I sat down to watch Deathwatch. In the back of my mind, there was the fact that there was a sound storyline with a solid cast - should prove more than a little entertaining and I was so dearly hoping to be scared out of my wits and be able to walk out of the cinema raving about it. However, this was not to be the case. Whilst I understand this is Michael Bassett's first foray into the motion picture world and, from other interviews I've read, this story has been a passion of his for a long time, I can't help feeling he bit off a lot more than he could chew. For starters, the dialogue inflicted upon the cast was clunky at best and simply unbelievable at worst, not being helped by the fact that each of the characters were quite neat cliche'd stereotypes dispite the truely courageous efforts of the cast. Match this to a very unremarkable score (I can't recall a single theme from the movie), no discernable direction, a director of photography that was quite obviously blind and a focus puller that either had arthritis or mistook feet for inches (the opening scenes as they approach the trench are testament to this) and you're left trying to quantify quite what it is that makes this movie so unbearable. The entire movie seemed woefully underexposed bringing levels of grain distractingly high. The computer graphics of the barbed wire, whilst cutting edge ten years ago, look laughable (especially the bodies-descending-into-ground sequence near the end) and even the omnipresent rats end up looking as if they've just been plonked into the frame seconds before the camera rolls. If Mr. Bassett had a couple more films under his belt and a decent crew to work with, I'm sure I'd have no problems recommending this film. As is, it should've been half the length. All in all, save yourself the pain and get yourself booked in for some root canal work - it's quicker and far less painful...
