Storyline

Jasbir, the son of the sharecropper, Thola, is treated as a brother by the landlord Dharam Singh. The landlord's son, however, does not continue this family tradition. As Jasbir's mother belongs to a nomed caste, the hero's love for the bride of the impotent barber Nika is fraught with problems. Symbolically, the building of Jasbir's father's tomb and then of his own tomb hastens jasbir's physical deterioration and death.

Excellent Punjabi Language Film
13 July 2015 | by kool-kamalSee all my reviews

It can be considered as one of best films the Punjabi Cinema ever produced. It is a critically acclaimed and well-received film based on a novel of the same name " Marhi Da Deeva' (Light of a Tomb) by veteran novelist Mr. Gurdial Singh. You can easily imagine the quality of the film that it won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi in 1989. The film's director Surinder Singh did 100% justice to the classic work. The film revolves around the centric character Jagsir (Jagsa) played extremely well by actor Raj Babbar, who belongs to lower cast and totally helpless by the out-dated customs of Indian Rural Society where lower cast people are not treated as normal human being. All the actors Raj Babbar, Deepti Naval, Pankaj Kapur, Prikshat Sahni, Kanwaljeet, Harbhajan Jabbal did their roles brilliantly. I strongly suggest this film to sincere viewers who admire serious & quality work.
