The film is set in the middle-East in the pre-Islam period. Daya, a very intelligent and brave slave girl tries to help the son of her master, after he loses all his wealth due to his lavish life.
Theerthadanam directed by débutant director B.Kennan stands out for its originality.The long forgotten, still the doyen of Malayalam script writers M.T.Vasudevan Nair's tightly written script has made Theerthadanam a class movie.MT's close associate the Doordarshan employee Kannan has done a decent job as the director. But the man who walks away with the film is Jayaram who is excellent as Karunakaran Master. This film tells us the love story of Karunakaran Master (Jayaram) and Vinodini (Suhasini). Vinodini was born into a very rich, affluent family while Karunakaran, comes from a lower middle class background. This poor master falls in love with his student but never had the courage to go and ask her father for his daughter's hand. After her education Vinodini becomes a teacher in a school. Time and age do not stop them from loving each other, though both had to keep it in their mind. They keep in touch with each other through letters. Karunakaran master had to marry Ammukutty out of compulsion from his family, but this too did not stop him from loving his beloved. Time passes and in their late fifties, through a letter they decide to meet each other at Mookambika temple. In the holy town they go down the memory lane. They decide to go to Kudajadri, where master's friend Bhatt mistakes them for husband and wife. Among the cast Jayaram lives the role of Karunakaran master. He has proved that, he can excel in serious roles as well. Suhasini is excellent as Vinodini.Watch it for i'ts sheer class and fine performances.M.T.Vasudevan Nair's script is well directed by débutant Kannan. He manages to keep a good tempo through out the film conveying dramatic tensions and underlining of the humane moments..........
