An average Canadian film about brave women from Albania.
31 August 2009 | by FilmCriticLalitRaoSee all my reviews

Serious cinema lovers must be informed that apart from Italian master Gianni Amelio's wonderful film "L'America",there are not so many films from western world which have tried to capture mystical beauty of Albania.Canadian director Nicholas Kinsey makes a valiant albeit unsuccessful attempt to recreate an Albanian tale in his film "Women Without Wings".His film is a tragic tale about ordinary Albanian women who decide to remain virgins in order to challenge male supremacy in a primitive, prejudiced society.A film about virgins rising unanimously against male supremacy would have turned out to be a major art house blockbuster but sadly viewers would not feel the same. This is because Nicholas Kinsey films a major part of his film in Canada wherein viewers encounter his Canadian heroine of Albanian origin doing not so heroic things. It is because of seeing ordinary events unfold on the screen that almost half of viewers' interest is lost."Women Without Wings" gathers pace in second half but it is already too late.By that time the film is unable to sustain viewers'interest in overall trajectory of dramatic events. This is one of the reasons why audience are unable to appreciate veteran Canadian actress Micheline Lanctot's performance as a valiant Albanian virgin.
