Sex & Nudity

  • Part 1 - there is an extended sex scene between two main characters. Although not overly explicit, breasts and bare chests are shown. Part 2 - there is a very explicit and extended sex scene involving two characters, very strong for a BBC television movie. There is strong sexual innuendo and simulated sex acts between two male characters.

Violence & Gore

  • Part 1 - Mostly moderate violence in some scenes: a character is slain by another, with blood spurting from his mouth. A man is beheaded though this is offscreen. A main character is stabbed several times in the chest - some blood is shown. Another main character is strangled to death. There are a few battle scenes with slashings, stabbings, screaming etc but these are not very graphic.
  • Part 2 - some extremely graphic violence and gore for a TV movie: a Catholic priest is hung for taking mass; another is brutally executed and cut open with a sharp instrument - very disturbing. Following a battle, a pit is shown with a large number of dead bodies - very bloody. A character is nearly drowned by his former friends. A character covered in blood is shown being tortured with thumb screws. A number of battle scenes although these are not on the whole too graphic.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some scenes of drinking alcohol in both parts. One character in Part 1 is portrayed as an alcoholic. A different character in Part 2 also expresses his reliance on alcohol.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Both Part 1 and Part 2 have some disturbing scenes as described above. Part 2 is far more explicit and graphic than Part 1.
