A ski jumper descends from winning 4 Olympic Gold Medals, to serving two years for stabbing a relative. Careers as a stripper and singer, plus five marriages, replete with allegations of domestic violence are fictionalized sympathetically in this dramedy. Alleged exploitation/manipulation of Matti, due to his naivety and gullibility, along with deterioration of his skiing ability due to heavy drinking and bad decisions is emphasized. Many Matti malapropisms a la Yogi Berra, attributed to the Finnish skiing legend, are employed as biopic comic dialogue.Written by
when i first went to see this movie i was waiting for it to stink big time.i was surprised when i noticed that the movie was actually heartbreaking and funny at the same time.Jasper Pääkkönen did an excellent job playing Matti nykänen.what annoys me is that the only reason they did this movie is because of money.they were obviously hoping that it will be the same kind of success like pahat pojat.Selin has only done one movie that i liked and that was paha maa.is it just me or do they use jasper a lot in their films?the movie isn't very deep ,it just shows us the side of Matti , that we have learned from the pages of "seiska" and "katso".i would have liked to see more skijumping but still everyone has to admit that this movie could have been so much worse.i sort of think that it is a story about being finnish:we are strong ,we eat sausages,we drink beer and sometimes we make mistakes.in the end i have to congratulate selin about the fact that i finally feel somekind of sympathy towards Matti , even if the movie is only fiction.you realise that people have manipulated Matti his whole life.my final conclusion is that this has to be the most tragic story that finland has ever seen.
