This film features both the title submarine (the Gouten/Atragon) and the giant serpent Manda.

The aliens use synthetic disguises. And in one scene, when an alien (disguised as Akira Takarada's character) is featured with the aliens live on worldwide TV, Don Frye's character exposes them by shooting at him, and the alien's disguise peels off, shocking all who watched it on TV.
Kane Kosugi's character flies a fighter within the tunnel of the Xilian mothership, and after sustaining critical damage, kamikazes into the energy shield's main reactor.
The Xilian aliens' mothership uses an energy shield that made their ship invulnerable to all attacks. It was eventually brought down (see reference to RETURN OF THE JEDI).
The Monster called "Zilla" is supposed to be a reference to this film.
Several aspects, including the Planet X aliens dressed in black leather, and Godzilla doing a "bullet-time" action sequence.
Some of the main heroes are superpowerful mutants. Also, Kane Kosugi's character shouts "Watch it, X-Man!" at an alien (from Planet X).
